With Manchester City defeating Fulham yesterday, Arsenal knew they needed to collect all three points and came out of the gate in full flow. United were pinned back as the Gunners imposed themselves on the game.
The breakthrough though came from a Casemiro error. Positioning himself to play out from the back, Andre Onana instead went long and gave the ball to Arsenal. Kai Havertz was sent down the right, with Casemiro now playing him onside, before cutting the ball into the box. Leandro Trossard arrived from the opposite wing and tapped home.
That goal was all Arsenal needed. Their ever-impressive defence nullified United’s young forward line kept them at bay and earned a clean sheet without heading out of second gear. Mikel Arteta gets a well-deserved win at Old Trafford and may just end his season with a Premier League title.

33 mins: Casemiro gets forward during a period of prolonged pressure for Man Utd. He’s encouraged to shoot from range and has a go only for his strike to get blocked by the first defender.
As United recover the ball, it’s played into Rasmus Hojlund who holds off Gabriel and looks to turn but Arsenal get defenders back to cover and three of them restrict Hojlund’s space before winning back possession.

Ben White goes on an enterprising run and combines in a one-two with Bukayo Saka inside the box. White collects the ball, nips by Aaron Wan-Bissaka and puts his foot through a shot which flies wide of the far post.

27 mins: The Arsenal fans are the only ones cheering inside Old Trafford as the home supporters look on with worried and nervous faces.
Arsenal have done the first part of their job which was to take a lead. Now they just need to keep it. At present they’re knocking the ball around confidently and forcing United to press further up the pitch.

United have lost all shape and composure since the goal, they tend to fall apart after conceding and Arsenal will want to punish that.

21 mins: Leandro Trossard gets the opener!
Andre Onana clears his lines but Arsenal bring the ball under control and chip it down the right wing for Kai Havertz. He’s onside and darts into the penalty area full of gusto.
Trossard makes a diagonal run from the opposite wing and gets into the six-yard box where Havertz puts the ball on a plate for him. It’s a tap-in and Arsenal go ahead.

18 mins: That’s a great pass from Gabriel to cut through three United players and feed Takehiro Tomiyasu the ball. He touches it to the left and looks for space in the box but Casemiro is on top of him in a flash and probs it away to safety.

15 mins: United are trying to play compact and narrow through the middle of the pitch with Arsenal doing the opposite and looking to get the ball wide for Saka and Leandro Trossard.
The game is settling down into a steadier rhythm after the rapid start. Arsenal probing at United’s defence.

12 mins: Man Utd are beginning to find their feet in the match. They’re seeing more of the ball though still not as much as Arsenal who are dangerous in possession.
Amrabat looks for Alejandro Garnacho with a cross field pass but Ben White wins the ball in the air and nods it into midfield.

9 mins: Leandro Trossard attempts to bring Arsenal forward on the counter attack but Sofyan Amrabat tracks him across the pitch and times a tackle to perfection to recover the ball.
That tackle gets the crowd going and there’s a growing belief that Man Utd are in this game.
Again, Saka is threaded the ball by Odegaard and carries it into the box. He looks to pass but Jonny Evans sticks out a leg and turns the ball behind for a corner.

6 mins: Saka is allowed the first chance at goal after a delightful short back heel from Martin Odegaard. The Arsenal captain receives the ball on the right side of the box, dinks it on and Saka curls a side-footed effort into the arms of Andre Onana.
At the other end of the pitch, Rasmus Hojlund gets fed with a forward pass but leans back on his strike and lifts the ball high and wide.
