It should have been inevitable given the superiority Pep Guardiola’s team have over, pretty much, every other team last season. City are treble-winners and won the elusive Champions League for the first time. They came into the Uefa Super Cup as massive favourites but needed a penalty shootout to get the job done.
Sevilla struck first. They were the better team in the opening 45 minutes as City failed to get up to the tempo of the match. Youssef En-Nesyri leapt above Nathan Ake to meet Marcos Acuna’s cross and nod the Spaniards in front. That goal saw them go into half-time with the lead but it woke City up.
Guardiola’s men then pushed on in the second half and equalised through Cole Palmer. Like En-Nesyri he slotted home a fine header and drew City level. The match went to a penalty shootout and the Champions League winners were perfect. They scored all five before Nemanja Gudelj missed his spot kick and gifted them the trophy.

Ivan Rakitic comes up for Sevilla. No-one has missed yet and Rakitic continues that trend with a blistering penalty into the left hand side netting.

Mateo Kovacic steps up for City. He sends the keeper the wrong way and slots it into the bottom left corner.

Rafa Mir hasn’t touched the ball since he came onto the pitch. It doesn’t show though as he goes for the same spot as Alvarez and blasts it in.

Argentine’s Julian Alvarez has the next spot kick. He belts it into the top right hand corner! Lovely penalty.

Lucas Ocampos has been Sevilla’s best player tonight and rightly so steps forward to take the first penalty. He sprints to the ball and rolls it to Ederson’s left after the goalkeeper leaps the wrong way.

Manchester City are taking the first spot kick and it’s going to be Erling Haaland to strike first.
Haaland has Bono to beat... he does! City take the lead.

The 2023 Super Cup will be decided by a penalty shootout. Sevilla took the lead in the first half through Youssef En-Nesyri but Manchester City upped the tempo and found the equaliser thanks to Cole Palmer in the second half.
Sevilla managed to keep City at bay though and force the Super Cup to penalties.
