"We will fight until the end" Pep on title race with Arsenal

Manchester City moved to within two points of league leaders Arsenal after seeing off Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium this afternoon.

Included in the starting line-up for the third consecutive game Phil Foden shone for the hosts with a combination of fanciful footwork and an eye for goal which saw him open the scoring after 15 minutes. City then tried to dictate the tempo of the game but Newcastle created chances of their own.

Eddie Howe’s men have only scored three league goals since the turn of the year and that lack of confidence was on display as Sean Longstaff, Callum Wilson and Joelinton all let opportunites to score slip by. A trio of substitutes threatened to bring Newcastle back into the game in the second half but it was a City sub that dealt the knockout blow.

Bernardo Silva replaced Kevin De Bruyne and just two and a minutes after his introduction earned the hosts the second goal they were after. From their it was plain-sailing for Pep Guardiola’s men who have put the pressure on title rivals Arsenal ahead of their fixture with Bournemouth.

Man City 2-0 Newcastle

73 mins: Here we go. Dan Burn and Jack Grealish come together before having words with each other. Rodri gives Burn a shove and it all kicks off.

Erling Haaland sprints over to square up with the big defender and both men end up getting yellow cards. That’s just an outpouring of frustration.

Haaland because he hasn’t scored, Burn because Newcastle are being outplayed.

70 mins: That second goal may just have killed off the game. Newcastle’s substitutions had started to bring the visitors back into the game but to get two goals back against City at home is a tricky task.

67 mins: Instant impact!

Manchester City double their lead and it’s the substitute Bernardo Silva who puts them ahead. The home side win the ball high up the pitch and feed it up to Jack Grealish.

He brings the ball to the edge of the box, squares it to Erling Haaland who flicks it on to Bernardo.

The midfielder touches it into the area then guides his shot past Nick Pope into the far bottom corner.
