The 2023/24 Premier League season is under way and you can follow every game and every goal right here with The Independent.

This year sees Manchester City try to defend their crown and claim a historic fourth title in succession. Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering City, who also won the Champions League and FA Cup last season, will have to see off Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and the rest to claim an unprecedented sixth league title in seven years.

Meanwhile Luton Town are making their first appearance in the Premier League, having risen from non-league in an incredible decade of progress. They followed Championship winners Burnley and second-placed Sheffield United in earning promotion to the top flight.

Manchester City vs Luton Town

Manchester City go into the break with a 1-0 lead over Luton Town at the Etihad Stadium. The home side might feel they should have at least a couple more after a dominant display in today's game, but they haven't been clinical enough in the final third. It took just two minutes for Guardiola's men to open the scoring, as Haaland's acrobatic effort rebounded off the head of Hashioka and flew into the top corner. Since then, City have looked the more likely to score the second, with Nunes unfortunate not to find the back of the net as his effort glanced off the post. Edwards will be happy to go into half-time just one goal down, but he will be demanding plenty more from his team from an attacking sense, with the Hatters struggling to get into City's half in the opening 45 minutes.

Kaminiski makes a strong stop! Doku wins the ball back in a dangerous position and finds De Bruyne on the edge of the area. He gets it out of his feet and looks to bend one into the top corner, but the Luton goalkeeper makes an excellent save and palms it behind for a corner.

City are turning the screw! Nunes finds De Bruyne on the edge and he plays a superb throughball into the box, and Alvarez is in space. He looks to fire it across goal, but Hashioka does well to clear it behind for City's eighth corner of the game, but the set-piece comes to nothing.

Doku is causing plenty of problems for the Luton defence, and the Belgian winger wins another corner for the home side. Alvarez delivers it into the penalty area and it's headed away. De Bruyne is there to meet it and he strikes from the edge of the area, but the Hatters get enough bodies in the way and are able to clear.

City are continuing to dominate proceedings in today's game, with Luton struggling to get out of their own penalty area. The Hatters have managed just 30 passes in the opposition half, while touching the ball once in City's box. Guardiola's men have created 1.61 expected goals, but they will need to be more clinical in the final third to ensure they secure the three points.

Dias floats the ball into the box and Nunes gets on the end of it, helping it back into the danger zone. It's heading towards Alvarez, but Townsend does well to head behind for a corner. Alvarez will take, but it's a poor effort and it lands on top of the Luton goal.

City have another opportunity from a corner and Alvarez will take once again. He sends it into the box but it's headed away, and Luton eventually put it behind for another corner. City take it short and it comes to De Bruyne on the edge of the box, but he's unable to make something happen and Guardiola's side give the ball away.
