Kompany a City legend - Pep

It was a humbling return to the Etihad Stadium for former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany. Now managing Burnley he brought the Championship leaders to Manchester with the hopes of causing an FA Cup upset but instead his team where on the receiving end of another Erling Haaland masterclass.

For 30 minutes Burnley held their own, pressing well and keeping the Premier League champions at bay in the final third. Haaland then combined with Alvarez to poke home the opener before adding a second three minutes later following a great run from Phil Foden to send City into the break two goals to the good.

Four more were added in the second half. City upped the tempo and went through the gears. Foden’s strike off the post fell to Haaland who drilled it home to complete his hat-trick before Julian Alvarez banged in a brace himself. To add to Burnley’s woes Cole Palmer came off the bench and nodded home a simple chance to send City into the semi-finals.

Man City 2-0 Burnley

51 mins: Opportunity for Man City here. They’re awarded a free kick about 25-yards out. Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden stand over the set piece and it’s De Bruyne who goes for goal.

He doesn’t catch it right at all and hooks the effort high and wide.

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer ‘glad to be back to normality’ in return to TV after BBC row

Gary Lineker returned to television screens on Saturday evening and, alongside fellow pundit Alan Shearer, addressed the situation last week which saw viewers faced with a wordless flagship football programme.

The BBC presenter was stood down from Match of the Day last weekend following his tweets on the UK government’s immigration policy.

Fellow pundits then followed him in opting against appearing on screen in solidarity, before a resolution was found during the week leading to Lineker and his team being reinstated for an FA Cup clash.

A prerecorded introduction saw Lineker’s first words highlight Vincent Kompany’s return to the Etihad Stadium, now as head coach of the visitors, before Lineker - seemingly struggling with a slight lack of voice - handed over to Shearer in-studio.

Half-time: Man City 2-0 Burnley

45+1 mins: Save! A run from Ian Maatsen sees the defender fly into the left side of the box and blast a shot at goal forcing Stefan Ortega to push the ball over the top and keep City two goals ahead.

Man City 2-0 Burnley

45 mins: Just the one minute of added time to play at the end of the first half. Apart from the three minutes when City scored twice it’s been a fairly even contest.

The Premier League champions haven’t played to their best tempo though.

Man City 2-0 Burnley

41 mins: There were just 179 seconds between Erling Haaland’s two goals for Manchester City.

Nathan Tella and Rico Lewis come together in the middle of the pitch and the Burnley man is awarded the free kick.

Man City 2-0 Burnley

38 mins: Those goals came from nowhere really. City just turned up the heat for five minutes and broke Burnley down twice.

The Clarets’ brave high line has been there undoing twice but they play with confidence and Vincent Kompany will believe that a goal in their favour can get them back in the match.
