Pep Guardiola left speechless following Erling Haaland’s brace against Brighton

Riyad Mahrez missed a penalty but Manchester City booked their place in the Champions League knockout stages as group winners as they earned a 0-0 draw at Borussia Dortmund, who also secured their place in the last 16 with a match to spare.

Mahrez’s penalty in the second half was City’s best chance in a match that saw Pep Guardiola’s side create few chances, with Erling Haaland brought off at half-time on his return to his former side. But Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made the save down to his right as Dortmund held on to claim the result they needed in order to finish as runners-up in Group G.

The German side had the better of the opening half and had the best chance of the opening period, which was put wide by Youssoufa Moukoko. The draw suited both sides, however, after Sevilla beat Copenhagen 3-0 earlier in the day.

Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Manchester City - PENALTY TO CITY!

Wow - so clumsy from Emre Can, who dives in on Mahrez in the box and leaves the referee with an easy decision to make!

55 mins: Rodri is back on, while Kevin De Bruyne is warming up for City. Dortmund then have a huge chance as the space opens up for Can to slide in Adeyemi, but he’s too slow and City get back in their shape.

51 mins: More Dortmund pressure! Reyna digs out a cross to Moukoko, who can’t quite get it under control with Ake providing pressure. It’s then sent back in but Moukoko can’t add the finishing touch.

Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Manchester City

48 mins: It didn’t look as if either Haaland or Cancelo had any injuries or knocks when they were brought off, but Guardiola may offer more of an explanation later. Remarkably, that’s only the fourth time Haaland has failed to score in a match for City, in what was his 16h appearance in all competitions.

HALF-TIME: Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Manchester City

It’s been a good half for Dortmund, who have created the best chances while keeping City and Haaland quiet at the other end. The German side will hope they do not regret missed chances from Adeyemi and, particularly, Moukoko in the second half.
