Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United LIVE: Champions League result, final score and reaction tonight
Relive all the action from the first-leg clash at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium
Super sub Anthony Elanga spared Manchester United’s blushes at Atletico Madrid as Ralf Rangnick’s side snatched a scarcely deserved 1-1 draw in the first leg of this Champions League last-16 tie.
Wednesday’s clash at a rocking Wanda Metropolitano brought together two Jekyll and Hyde sides that stand no chance of ending challenging seasons with domestic honours.
United again underwhelmed on Wednesday evening, but teenage substitute Elanga cancelled out Joao Felix’s early bullet header to secure Rangnick’s men what could prove to be an important draw with Atletico.
The interim manager may, in truth, have been satisfied to leave Spain with a narrow first-leg loss given the abolishment of away goals and the fact his side floundered for much of the night.
Felix’s thundering early header gave Atleti a seventh-minute lead and cumbersome United were breathing a sigh of relief when Sime Vrsaljko hit the crossbar just before the break.
The home fans certainly enjoyed Real Madrid great Cristiano Ronaldo struggling for United, who would score with their first shot on target in the 80th minute.
Teenage substitute Elanga kept his cool after being put through by Bruno Fernandes and slotted past Jan Oblak, with Antoine Griezmann rattling the woodwork as Diego Simeone’s Atleti pushed for a late winner.
Relive all the action below.
Atletico Madrid 1-1 Manchester United
82 mins: Manchester United’s first shot in target has come in the 80th minute. That shot on target has resulted in a goal.
Relief for the players, staff and fans. They’ve gotten away with this, but they won’t care.
GOAL! Atletico Madrid 1-1 Manchester United (Elanga, 80)
80 mins: Oh, you wouldn’t believe it?!
It’s the only real chance of the game that Manchester United have had and they’ve buried it!
Fred sets Fernandes free and he places a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Elanga who cooly strokes the ball into the bottom corner beyond the stranded Jan Oblak!
Incredible. They’ve been dreadful for almost the entire match, but the substitute has come up trumps!
Atletico Madrid 1-0 Manchester United
79 mins: It is Ronaldo who takes and it’s a solid five yards over the bar. It simply has not been his evening.
Atletico Madrid 1-0 Manchester United
78 mins: Great position for Manchester United here. Fred is barged over on the edge. Ronaldo is over the free-kick.
Atletico Madrid 1-0 Manchester United
76 mins: It’s a double change as Lemar and Griezmann come on for Felix and Lodi. The two players coming off have been outstanding for Atletico this evening.
Man Utd have also made a change - Anthony Elanga on for the underwhelming Marcus Rashford.
Atletico Madrid 1-0 Manchester United
75 mins: Lodi is in acres of space again on the left after some deft play from Felix sees him open the pitch up.
Lodi clips the ball back but it’s straight into the boot of Varane as four Atletico players scream for it and are left very angry in the penalty area.
Thomas Lemar is preparing to come on as Kondogbia fires one over the top.
Atletico Madrid 1-0 Manchester United
73 mins: The pace has gone out of the game following the substitutions - not quite what Rangnick would have wanted from the fresh legs.
Felix goes for an audacious bicycle kick from 20 yards out but he skews it tamely wide. Don’t blame him for trying - he has been one of the shining lights in this match.
Dare I say United are settling for this result? There’s no urgency in their play.
Atletico Madrid 1-0 Manchester United
70 mins: It’s all getting a bit niggly in there. United need to create something but equally 1-0 is not the worst result in the world - particularly given their awful performance.
Fernandes is deemed to be offside after thinking he had won a corner. Suarez and Griezmann continue to watch on from the sidelines. They are still warming up.
Atletico Madrid 1-0 Manchester United
68 mins: Here come the changes! It’s a triple change for Manchester United. Telles, Wan-Bissaka and Matic are on for Shaw, Lindelof and Pogba.
A proper shake-up for the visitors as they search for an equaliser. Will it pay off?
Atletico Madrid 1-0 Manchester United
66 mins: Reinaldo is the third player to go in the book as he pushes Pogba in the face and United have a free-kick in a dangerous area which Fernandes is stood over. He is sending this one into the box.
In it comes... out it goes. And then Rashford loses the ball and goes on to commit a foul. He goes in the book. It’s been a torrid night for Rashford so far.
