Holders Manchester City cruised into the semi-finals of the FA Cup thanks to two deflected strikes from Bernardo Silva that gave them a 2-0 win over a lacklustre Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

City made five changes from the side that started last weekend's 1-1 Premier League draw with Liverpool and still managed to make the semi-finals of the competition for the sixth season in a row as Newcastle provided little resistance. City took the lead in the 13th minute when a Silva shot took a wicked deflection off Newcastle defender Dan Burn, wrong-footing keeper Martin Dubravka and sending the ball looping into the net.

The home side went 2-0 up in the 31st minute and again it was Portuguese playmaker Silva cutting in from the right and shooting, with Sven Botman's head helping to steer the ball past Dubravka this time. Alexander Isak almost pulled a goal back in the 36th minute but Stefan Ortega got down brilliantly to his left to keep the Swedish striker's bouncing shot out. It proved to be Newcastle's only effort on goal in the game.

Just after the hour mark, Eddie Howe lost patience with his stuttering side and made four substitutions and though the introduction of Miguel Almiron gave the visitors a much-needed injection of creativity in their attack, the home side quickly re-adjusted. Erling Haaland and Jeremy Doku both had a number of chances to score but manager Pep Guardiola will not be too bothered by their profligacy in front of goal as his side outclassed the visitors from start to finish.

Man City vs Newcastle LIVE: Latest FA Cup quarter-final updates

Newcastle seem to be warming up with a back four, so perhaps Murphy will be playing more as a ‘proper’ winger than a wing-back.

Both teams are in the tunnel now as kick-off looms. There are around 8,000 Newcastle fans present tonight.

Man City vs Newcastle LIVE: Latest FA Cup quarter-final updates

Just 10 minutes until kick-off now, as Newcastle look to take a step closer to their first major silverware since 1955, and the home side look to kick-off another impressive end-of-season run of form.

City will be the favourites due to home advantage and Newcastle’s injury woes, but don’t write off the Magpies, who often perform well in the cup competitions and have knocked City out of one domestic cup already this season.

You’d think the loss of De Bruyne could be crucial to City, and players like Gordon and Isak will have to step up if Newcastle are win here.

Remember, the game has to be decided today, so we’re in for extra-time and maybe even penalties if the score are level after 90 minutes.

How the sides come into the game

City haven’t actually lost in their 21 games, since a 1-0 loss to Aston Villa before Christmas. This run has included a straightforward Champions league tie against FC Copenhagen, and a victorious campaign in the Club World Cup (in which they beat Fluminense in the final).

Newcastle, who currently sit in 10th place in the league, have had more mixed fortunes, with their last five games including losses to Chelsea and Arsenal, as well as wins against Wolves and Blackburn and a draw against Bournemouth.

Newcastle have lost 15 of their last 16 away games against Manchester City in all competitions, but won 1-0 at home earlier this season to knock City out of the Carabao Cup. How they’d welcome a similar result tonight.

How the sides come into the game

Man City are looking to take another step towards an unprecedented ‘double treble’ with a win today. The FA Cup holders are currently in the hunt for the Premier League title, and have been drawn against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Pep Guardiola’s side come off the back of a tightly contested 1-1 draw at Anfield last Sunday, in which they were the better side in the first half but were dominated in the second period.

The away side, who haven’t been in the FA Cup semi-finals since 2005, are hoping to end a major trophy drought that has lasted since 1954/55, when they beat City 3-1 in the FA Cup final. Last season, the Magpies lost 2-0 to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final.

Eddie Howe’s side approach the game off the back of a disappointing 3-2 loss at Stamford Bridge on Monday.
