Fresh off the back of winning the Barclays Premier League Manager of the Month award for September, Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag takes his team to the Etihad Stadium for his first ever Manchester derby this afternoon.

Manchester City started the gameweek in second place, just one point behind league leaders Arsenal, but following the Gunners victory yesterday Pep Guardiola’s men will need to pick up three points just to maintain the pace with the London club. Luckily for City fans, Guardiola’s men are unbeaten in the league so far this term and most recently swept past Wolves with a 3-0 away win just before the international break putting them in fine touch for a Manchester derby.

Meanwhile, Ten Hag’s award win gives you an indication of how he’s managed to turnaround Manchester United’s own form. The Red Devils have won their last four league games in a row including a victory over Liverpool and beating Arsenal 3-1 in their last domestic outing. Yet City away is always a tricky affair and it will be the Dutchman’s finest victory so far if he can help United can pull it off.

Follow all the action from the Manchester derby:

A hat-trick of hat-tricks: Erling Haaland’s record-breaking goal rush

Erling Haaland became the first man in Premier League history to score hat-tricks in three successive home games when he completed a derby day treble against Manchester United.

Here, the PA news agency takes a look at the £51million summer signing’s goal rush at the Etihad Stadium.

Ruthless Erling Haaland helps Man City destroy Man United in the derby

When Pep Guardiola arrived in the Premier League, there was still a question of a power struggle in this city. It was tilting in Manchester City’s favour, no doubt, but not decisively. Seven years and four league titles later, the most damning thing about derby defeats like these for Manchester United is that they do not come as much of a surprise anymore, and especially not when their rivals have a player like Erling Haaland.

Haaland’s third consecutive hat-trick in home league games - the first player in the Premier League era to achieve such an astonishing feat - set up a 6-3 win. Phil Foden also hit the first three derby goals of his career and the margin of victory was only softened by two late Anthony Martial goals. The scale of City’s dominance may have been expected but will be no less painful for Erik ten Hag, who saw United’s mini-revival of late extinguished in emphatic style by the champions.

It is strange to think now that team news whispers brought cause for some pre-match City jitters. A calf injury ruled out Rodri, depriving the champions of the one player who has done more than any other to define the more controlled gameplan of Guardiola’s recent years. With Kalvin Phillips also sidelined, there was no like-for-like replacement. Ilkay Gundogan played the holding role, protecting an unfamiliar centre-back partnership of Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji. Ruben Dias was only a substitute.

Reaction from Foden and Haaland

Erling Haaland and Phil Foden were both given the player of the match award and in their shared interview after the game they told Sky Sports:

Erling Haaland: “Yeah, not bad! We scored six goals! What can I say. It’s amazing. To win at home, score six goals, it’s nice.

“You can feel it all the time. You can see the passes we give each other. We always want to go forward and to attack. It’s what I love about the team. In the end, it’s amazing. There is nothing more to say.”

Phil Foden: “It’s a dream come true playing in a derby being a City fan as well. It’s been a pleasure to be a part of this team.

“Our determination was from kick-off and we finished our chances.”

Man City vs Man Utd player ratings: Erling Haaland and Phil Foden run riot in derby day thrashing

Manchester City thrashed local rivals Manchester United in the derby on Sunday, triumphing 6-3 in the Premier League thanks in huge part to Phil Foden and Erling Haaland.

The onslaught started almost immediately and the visitors had to make three blocks inside their six-yard box in the first five minutes, but even so it wasn’t long before the breakthrough came - Foden curling home inside the near post after Bernardo Silva’s low cross.

It was relentless from the hosts and Erling Haaland scored twice and four minutes before teeing up Foden for a second too, all before the half-time whistle.
