Guardiola admits to doubts but says he still has the support of chairman

Bernardo Silva scored an early goal but struggling Manchester City could only muster a single point in a 1-1 Premier League draw with Everton to kick off a full slate of Boxing Day games.

City’s slump has seen them win just once in their last 13 matches across all competitions and they provisionally sit sixth in the table with 28 points, 11 below leaders Liverpool who have two games in hand. Everton are 15th, five points above the drop zone.

In the 14th minute, Jeremy Doku played a ball in behind the Toffees’ defence and Silva’s deflected shot found the far corner but Iliman Ndiaye drew Everton level when he took a touch to settle the ball, then unleashed a half-volley into the top right corner.

City looked set to retake the lead when Erling Haaland stepped up to the penalty spot in the second half after Seamus Coleman’s tackle on Savinho but goalkeeper Jordan Pickford dived correctly to safe the shot. Haaland headed home the rebound but it was chalked off for offside.

Manuel Akanji reacts to Man City draw with Everton

Manuel Akanji thought Man City deserved all three points today. Here’s what he said:

“We had plenty of chances to score goals. Their goal came out of nowhere. Second half we had the penalty chance, we created opportunities but the ball didn’t want to go in.

“We played really well. Maybe you see it differently but I think we played well compared to other matches.

“This can’t happen that we nearly conceded the counterattack late on. Otherwise we defended well as a team and attacked great as a team. We have to keep going, the next chance is against Leicester.”

Man City 1-1 Everton

Some final thoughts from Richard Jolly at the Etihad

A hard-fought point for Everton and a well-deserved one. They were organised, dogged and determination, allied with a threat on the break, and showed the best aspects of Sean Dyche's football. But City lacked genuine creativity or incision, let a lead slip and dropped two more points. The slump goes on.

FULL-TIME! Man City 1-1 Everton

And that’s it! All over at the Etihad and it’s another bleak day for Man City. They can’t buy a win now. Just one win in 13 games...

Again, they went 1-0 up through Bernardo Silva but Iliman Ndiaye equalised and then Jordan Pickford superbly saved Erling Haaland’s penalty in the second half. A good away performance from Everton - another point banked

Man City 1-1 Everton, 90+6 mins

Into the final minute of additional time. Savinho’s cross is too high for Haaland and Tarkwoski heads clear.

Now Everton break, they’ve got a four on two here! They couldn’t, could they... Broja eventually passes to Harrison but it’s too slow and his shot is easily blocked on the edge of the box.

Foden booked for grabbing at Tarkowski’s shorts and holding on for dear life! More precious time that Everton can take.

Counter attack from Everton. It’s decently worked, Gueye is in space on the right of the box but his shot is deflected wide for a corner.

The Toffess flub the corner completely and it’s possession immediately back to City.

A cutback and Rico Lewis’s eyes light up but he leans back and his shot is comfortably over the bar. Pep Guardiola looks livid.

Man City 1-1 Everton, 90 mins

It’s 11 bodies behind the ball time for Everton. Patterson blocks Foden’s cross for a corner.

And it’s SIX added minutes. De Bruyne’s corner scrmabled away by Mykolenko, then Gueye, then Doucoure, who slices the ball into the stands.

Bodies on the line as Mykolenko throws himself at a Savinho shot. Pickford then grabs a loose ball and slows things down, taking his time before thumping a long ball into the opposition half.

One minute plus added time for Guardiola’s men.

Coleman off, Nathan Patterson on at the back for Everton.
