Newcastle vs Liverpool LIVE: Premier League result, final score and reaction as Naby Keita nets winner
Newcastle 0-1 Liverpool: Follow reaction as the Reds edge past the Magpies to leapfrog Man City atop the Premier League table
Naby Keita ensured Liverpool’s quadruple hopes remain very much alive as he fired them to victory at in-form Newcastle to keep up the pressure on Premier League title rivals Manchester City.
Keita’s assured first-half finish was enough to claim a 1-0 win at St James’ Park on a day when Reds manager Jurgen Klopp was able to rest Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara and Mohamed Salah from his startling line-up ahead of Tuesday’s decisive Champions League semi-final trip to Villarreal.
Liverpool might - and probably should - have won more comfortably in front of a boisterous crowd of 52,281 as they held the upper hand for much of a contest which saw the Magpies’ hopes of a fifth successive league win and a seventh on the trot at home wilt in the face of almost constant pressure.
Eddie Howe’s men were never able to build up the kind of head of steam which has eased them clear of the relegation battle, perhaps a reminder of how far they have to go before they can once again compete with English football’s best on a sustained basis.
Follow all the reaction from a crucial Reds win at St James’ Park below:
Leeds 0-2 Man City
58 mins: Man City win themselves a corner and Grealish is pelted with pieces of paper as he tries to take it.
He laughs it off, but there was a tiny little kid throwing stuff at the Man City man. Not what you want to see.
Man City totally in control now.
Leeds 0-2 Man City
56 mins: For all of Leeds’ hardwork and impressive performances, they have conceded from two set-pieces. That will be so disappointing for Jesse Marsch.
By contrast, Manchester City have now netted 18 times from set-pieces this season - more than any other Premier League side.
GOAL! Leeds 0-2 Man City (Ake, 54)
54 mins: It’s in from the corner. Game over?
Another set-piece and another goal for the Premier League champions. Foden sends the corner into the box, Dias nods it down and Ake sweeps home from inside the six-yard box.
So easy. So simple. Probably the knockout blow.
Leeds 0-1 Man City
54 mins: Man City’s turn to pour forward.
Jesus finds Sterling down the right and the England international cuts in past one, two, three Leeds players before skewing his shot. It’s such a timid effort that Grealish gets it back under control and goes for a curling effort of his own but it’s well wide. Has to do better there.
City come again as Cancelo crosses for Jesus but Ayling puts it behind for a corner.
Leeds 0-1 Man City
52 mins: Leeds are giving Manchester City a real game. Newcastle struggled to really take the game to Liverpool earlier, even though they did stay in it throughout. But Leeds are offering a more dynamic approach going forward.
City come forward now though...
Leeds 0-1 Man City
50 mins: Rodrigo sends a cross into the box which Harrison leaps for but Ederson is there ahead of him. Harrison goes down and the fans plead for a penalty but the Leeds man is laughing on the floor. He knows it wasn’t.
Such an atmosphere at Elland Road.
Leeds 0-1 Man City
48 mins: Grealish bursts beyond Ayling and sends a great ball across the face of goal but Jesus, Sterling and Foden are all stood on the edge of the box. Grealish looks crestfallen.
The ex-Villa man is being booed at every opportunity by the home fans. Not sure why. Because he has been fouled a load of times?
Leeds 0-1 Man City
46 mins: Back underway then and Junior Firpo is straight on the front foot as he bursts down the left and plays in a cross which momentarily has Ederson worried but ends up dropping beyond the far post.
HT: Leeds 0-1 Man City
The players are back out so we are going to be underway in the next few moments. A reminder that Dan James came on for Stuart Dallas at the end of that first half.
