Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp details importance of Man United rivalry

Mohamed Salah became Liverpool’s record Premier League scorer as they humiliated Manchester United and ended any chance of Erik ten Hag’s men joining the title race in an historic 7-0 mauling at Anfield.

The new look forward pairing of Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo each scored twice to help Liverpool to the largest victory in the fixture’s 211-match history.

Three goals came in a seven-minute spell either side of half-time which left the United shellshocked and extended their run of not winning at Anfield since Jurgen Klopp’s first encounter with them in January 2016.

Salah then provided a timely reminder of his enduring qualities with two goals of his own to go past Robbie Fowler as the club’s record Premier League scorer with his 128th and 129th goals.

The icing on the cake was a final goal from substitute Roberto Firmino, who on Friday told the club he would be ending his eight-year stay at Anfield in the summer.

Ruthless Liverpool hit seven to thrash shambolic Manchester United

A game that defied belief, as well as recent form and history, and yet may have in some way still conformed to greater realities of the teams.

The bald facts beyond that sensational 7-0 scoreline are that Liverpool FC again claimed another huge home victory - and that’s saying something - as Manchester United once more failed to win a big away game.

There was of course so much more to it than that, as both went to levels that could scarcely have been imagined. It was really a result that couldn’t have even been imagined, and was at times difficult to make sense of, let alone keep count.

It was actually the first time in history there has ever been a seven-goal margin in the history of fixture, setting a new record that trumps the first ever game between the sides at Anfield in 1895 by a goal. That was 7-1 to Liverpool. This could have been so much more. It was actually United’s worst ever competitive defeat.

The Anfield crowd still demanded more, telling the team they wanted eight.

Erik ten Hag speaking to Sky Sports

“I don’t have an explanation. In the first half we were quite in control. Second half at the start we gave two goals away. There was no team anymore. We didn’t stick to the plan. There were 11 individuals.

“I don’t know, it’s really bad. I have given my opinion [to the players]. It was unprofessional. You always have to stick together as a team. We didn’t do that. There was no discipline. You have can setbacks but you have to stick together and do your job.

“We made the wrong decisions. That for me is unprofessional. I’m really disappointed and angry. We let our fans down. As a squad, as a team, you cannot allow this. You have to stick together and support each other and fight for each other. You have to defend. We didn’t do that and for me that is really unprofessional.

“We have made a lot of progress but you see what happens when you don’t keep standards. What I have said in the dressing room is that this is unacceptable. But also it is only one game. We will bounce back. This team is strong enough and we will reset and bounce back.”

Klopp on Mo Salah breaking Liverpool record

“129 goals, that is insane. What an unbelievable number. He is a special player. We appreciate him now but in the future people will look back and be wow, we witnessed something really special.

“It was all top performances today. That is very important for us - 13 games to come? A lot of points to go for. Tonight it was perfect.”

Jurgen Klopp sepaking to Sky Sports

“No words. Spectacular football game. Outstanding. We played top football against the team in form.

“The second half the start was pretty good and the end was pretty good. That is football, it can happen.

“It was the push we wanted. It puts us in the right direction. Everyone has to know we are still around. It wasn’t the case for a while but tonight was a proper show of what we can be and what we have to be from now on.”

Bruno Fernandes labelled a ‘disgrace’ as Roy Keane and Gary Neville take aim at ‘embarrassing’ Man Utd

Manchester United’s senior performers came in for massive criticism from former players in the wake of their 7-0 drubbing at the hands of Liverpool.

The Red Devils have enjoyed a resurgence this season under Erik ten Hag and won the Carabao Cup recently, but suffered their joint-biggest ever league defeat at the hands of their biggest rivals at Anfield on Sunday.

Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez each scored twice, with Roberto Firmino adding another off the bench - with six of those goals coming in the second half as United imploded and the Reds took full advantage.

Speaking on Sky Sports during the match, Gary Neville picked out Bruno Fernandes in particular for a petulant and ineffective showing, with the Portuguese player more than once being shown walking without making effort to win back possession as Liverpool players ran away from him, before also appearing to gesticulate to the United bench that he wanted to be substituted.

Reaction from Bruno Fernandes

“It is very frustrating, disappointing, sad because it is a really bad result. We came here with a different mindset before the game.

“The first half was really good from ourselves, we had a lot of chances. We controlled most of the first half I think, they didn’t create that much.

“[In the second half] we tried to go forward and score goals and we lost a bit of balance. We gave too much space away against this kind of team. We have to avoid that.

“The games are coming thick and fast. We had setbacks in the past and we have to come back quickly again. This is what Manchester United are about, we can go down but we have to get back up.”

The reinvention of Cody Gakpo sparks new Liverpool era

Ruud van Nistelrooy was scarcely an impartial observer. His advice may have been laced with self-interest, both as the current PSV Eindhoven manager and a former Manchester United player, but he told Cody Gakpo to wait and then go to Old Trafford. It was, he mischievously later said, Gakpo’s dream move. Gakpo didn’t listen; or not to Van Nistelrooy, anyway. Virgil van Dijk helped persuade him to join Liverpool instead.

The wisdom of the decision could be disputed. Before he had even debuted for Liverpool, they had been eviscerated by Brentford. He played in the embarrassments at Brighton and Wolves. He was in the attack in the first European game in their illustrious history when they conceded five goals at Anfield.

And so a first meeting with United, with the suitors who had surged on without him, who had already won one trophy with a Dutchman they recruited in January in their attack and promised two more, had the potential to be a discomfiting, chastening affair. And it was: just for United.

Erik ten Hag speaking to Match of the Day

“I think we played a decent first half. One mistake in organisation just before half-time. Second half it was just not us. It was not our standards. We didn’t play as a team. It was unprofessional. Yes [I am angry]. Definitely.

“I am surprised because I have seen the last weeks and months this team is resilient and has a winning attitude. Second half we didn’t have a winning attitude at all. We didn’t stick to the plan and we didn’t do our jobs.

“We didn’t track back and it was really unprofessional. We have seen in the past we can bounce back. After Brentford, after Manchester City. This is definitely a strong setback and is unacceptable. I’m really disappointed and angry about it.

“It is a reality check. We have to take this strong.”

Reaction from Mo Salah

“It is very special to win a game like that. We need to stay humble and win our games. Hopefully it will give us a big push.

“It’s very special. I cannot lie. To get it today [breaking Robbie Fowler’s record] against Manchester United is unbelievable.”

Reaction from Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson

“It’s a fantastic day for everyone. The performance levels, every player was top quality. You could see the energy levels were back. We have shown recently we are on the path back.

“It’s a big win but we need to concentrate on the next game. I’m really happy for Mo [Salah]. He dedicates his life to football. He is the first one in and the first one out.”
