And then, after six unanswered goals, it was down to three points. Pep Guardiola’s description that Liverpool are a “pain in the ass” required the addition of the word “almighty” on Wednesday night as they bulldozed Leeds and took a mega bite into Manchester City’s lead at the Premier League summit.

There was zero sign of anxiety or elevated pressure from those representing the home side on the pitch in a game that took on much greater significance after Harry Kane’s towering 95th-minute header at the Etihad injected life into the title race.

Instead, there was a fury and ferocity to tear into Marcelo Bielsa’s side and cause increased discomfort for City, as told in the first half stats alone: three Liverpool goals, eight shots on target versus none.

The ruthlessness was such that either side of Mohamed Salah’s penalties, a winding Joel Matip run had finally resulted in a fine finish after what seems a lifetime of him trying that.

The warm-ups are over at Anfield. The players head out onto the pitch. Liverpool can close the gap on Manchester City to just three points with a win. Leeds can move further away from the relegation zone if they pick up all three points. Lots to play for then.

Kick off is next.

Elsewhere in the Premier League

There are two other Premier League fixtures taking place this evening as Burnley host Tottenham and Crystal Palace travel to Watford. Those results will have a bearing on Leeds as both Watford and Burnley are aiming to move out of the relegation zone.

Kick off at Anfield is still 15 minutes away but the first two Premier League games on the night as just about to get going.

Liverpool vs Leeds: Klich previews Liverpool game

Leeds midfielder Mateusz Kilch is looking forward to kicking off against Liverpool this evening and hopes the game will emulate the clash between these sides last year that saw the Reds win a seven-goal thriller 4-3. Klich said:

It was a good game last season, I scored. It was exciting as not many of us had played in the Premier League before and we saw the schedule with Liverpool away for the first game and they were the best team in Europe at that point.

“It was an unbelievable game, my dream was to score a goal in the Premier League and I did it. Even though we lost 4-3, everyone was very positive about us and excited and we only left with good feelings.

“This game is going to be better though with the fans as well, so I’m sure it will be a good game. Liverpool are one of the best teams in the country, especially when Virgil Van Dijk came back, now they’re now back to the shape they were in when they won the Premier League and Champions League.

“It is another tough game and then we have Tottenham, but there are no easy games in the Premier League. If someone thinks for example thinks playing Burnley away is way easier than playing Liverpool, it is not right, because they are all difficult games in the Premier League and all difficult opponents.

“This is going to be massive for our fans and us, I personally love playing in big games and I can’t wait.”

Liverpool vs Leeds: Bielsa reflects on Man Utd defeat

Leeds manager, Marcelo Bielsa, spoke about his team’s last fixture and how the result - a 4-2 loss to Manchester United at home - wasn’t a fair reflection of the game. He said:

The dominance was alternate [against Manchester United]. The situations we created at goal were similar. The difference in the play between the two teams, you couldn’t see a massive difference.

“The result the game deserved wasn’t our defeat, but I also feel uncomfortable that again we didn’t deserve what we deserved to get. We need to see the reasons why we are conceding all these goals and prevent the reasons why this is happening.”
