Klopp on Liverpool injury latest and Brentford

Jurgen Klopp burst towards the Kop, furiously fist-pumping to illustrate the importance of victory against Brentford. This wasn’t a blockbuster game, nor blockbuster opponents but Liverpool’s manager knows the fight and three points can be vital signs for the rest of the season.

A first win in four league matches came on his 350th outing in charge of the club, catapulting them above Chelsea in second, but it wasn’t without heaps of toil.

Virgil van Dijk kissed Fabinho’s head, a symbol of relief as Anfield broke into rapture. They had probed and probed some more. They had come close and then started to come unstuck as Brentford began to show aggression beyond defensive resistance in their own box.

Finally, on 44 minutes, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner had evaded the visitors’ defiance and was headed in at the back post by Fabinho. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Takumi Minamino wrapped up the win in the second half.

18 mins: Mbeumo and Henry link-up on Brentford’s left wing and work the ball towards the corner flag. Alexander-Arnold gets across to win the ball off Henry and then boots it out of play off the left-back to win Liverpool a throw in.

The Reds sweep up the pitch with Robertson driving through the midfield. He slips the ball out to Jota on the left wing. Jota dinks the ball around Kristoffer Ajer but gets cleaned out by the Brentford defender.

Oxlade-Chamberlain is there to win the ball and he knocks it back to the Liverpool right-back. Alexander-Arnold runs onto a shot and drills one just over the crossbar! It’s been all Liverpool so far.

12 mins: Back at Anfield, Liverpool are pressuring the Brentford back line. They’ve won a couple of corners, the second of which was swung into the box by Andy Robertson. It comes to Diogo Jota but ricochets off the forward and bounces wide of the post.

Trent Alexander-Arnold then drives down the right wing, cuts inside and has a shot from range blocked just inside the box.

Raphinha brings the ball into the right side of the box and pulls it back to Dan James, I think, he shoots and forces a diving save out of Lukasz Fabianski. The ball comes out to Adam Forshaw who lays it off to Jack Harrison. He sets himself and then belts one past the goalkeeper to send the visitors in front!

Trent Alexander-Arnold floats the free kick over to the back post where Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk are waiting. Matip recovers the ball and knocks it behind off a Brentford defender. Liverpool think they’ve won a corner but the assistant referee raises the offside flag against the Reds’ centre-back.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will not write off their rare goalless performance as he believes it will provide valuable help in preparing for the visit of Brentford.

The 0-0 draw with 10-man Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg was the first time since April the Reds had not scored in a home match and only the second occasion this season they had drawn a blank.
