Liverpool train ahead of hosting Atletico Madrid in UCL

Liverpool are through to the Champions League last-16 two games early, after securing a fourth group-stage victory on Wednesday night courtesy of a 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid.

Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane netted first-half goals for Jurgen Klopp’s side, while Diego Simeone’s men saw their attempts to get back into the game all but disappear after Felipe was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Mane. Both Jota and Luis Suarez saw goals ruled out for marginal offside calls at either end in the second half, while the Reds spurned several other opportunities to move even further clear on the scoreboard.

Ultimately it mattered little, with top spot now guaranteed for Liverpool even with two group matches still left to play, while Klopp was also boosted by the return of Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara after injury - but lost Roberto Firmino in the second half. Atletico, meanwhile, sit third in the group, a point behind Porto who they play in the final gameweek.

Liverpool 2 - 0 Atletico Madrid

30 mins: Suarez mishits a cross-field ball and Alexander-Arnold intercepts before floating a long ball down the right side for Salah. The Egyptian controls the ball beautifully and drives into the box, weaving around Hermoso who can’t commit to a tackle without risking a second yellow card. Salah looks to find Jota and Mane in the box but overruns it and the ball rolls out for a goal kick.

Liverpool 2 - 0 Atletico Madrid

27 mins: Atletico has responded as you’d expect. They’re having their best spell on the ball inside Liverpool’s half, passing the ball out wide and trying to pick gaps in the Liverpool defence. It comes out to Trippier who drives to the byline but is tracked by Tsimikas and the Liverpool left-back is strong enough to force Trippier to run the ball out for a goal kick.

Liverpool 2 - 0 Atletico Madrid

24 mins: Liverpool have once again got off to the perfect start against Atletico Madrid. They were also 2-0 up against Atleti in Matchday Three but Antoine Griezmann scored twice before half-time to peg them back.

It’s doubtful Jurgen Klopp’s men will be as sloppy with their two-goal lead tonight.

GOAL! Liverpool 2 - 0 Atletico Madrid (Mane, 21’)⚽️

21 mins: Alexander-Arnold with another expert cross, Mane with a tap-in, Liverpool two goals to the good. Jota gives the ball to Mane in the midfield and he shrugs off De Paul before driving into the middle of the Atletico final third. He lays the ball off to Henderson before making a run into the box. Henderson gives it to Alexander-Arnold on the inside right and he slots a low cross into the six-yard box where Mane arrives for the simplest of tap-ins.

Liverpool 1 - 0 Atletico Madrid

19 mins: A hopeful long ball from Alisson drops for Salah who leans on Hermoso and tries to win a free kick as he brings the ball under control. Atletico Madrid get more men back to help out but the ball comes to Sadio Mane on the inside left channel. He carries the ball to the front edge of the box and lets a left-footed effort fly but the shot gets blocked in the box.

GOAL! Liverpool 1 - 0 Atletico Madrid (Jota, 13’)⚽️

13 mins: What a goal from Liverpool! Diogo Jota puts the Reds in front at Anfield. Salah and Henderson combine on the right wing but can’t find a way into the box. Henderson instead passes it back to Alexander-Arnold who glances into the box and whips a brilliant cross into the six-yard box. It bounces behind the Atletico back line just as Jota makes his run to the ball and finishes with an easy headed effort to the back post.

Liverpool 0 - 0 Atletico Madrid

12 mins: Luis Suarez wins Atletico’s first corner of the game. Joao Felix plays it short to Correa and gets it back before knocking a pass to the edge of the box for Rodrigo De Paul. He slips a lovely pass into the box for Correa who whips it towards the far post but can’t pick out a teammate.

Liverpool 0 - 0 Atletico Madrid

9 mins: Mario Hermoso is shown the first yellow card of the game for a heavy tackle on Salah over on Liverpool’s right wing. Alexander-Arnold swings the resultant free kick into the box but it’s easily dealt with by the Atletico back line.
