Manchester United and Arsenal were both in the headlines this afternoon as they considered moves for Paris Saint-Germain’s soon-to-be departed striker Edinson Cavani. The Uruguayan is out of contract at the end of the season and available on a free transfer, and reports in his homeland suggest that offers have already been made from the two Premier League clubs along with Atletico Madrid. Chelsea meanwhile are on the hunt for a defender, with eyes on Issa Diop of West Ham and their former centre-back Nathan Ake at Bournemouth, with £40m bis prepared for both depending on who the club decide to focus on.

Tottenham Hotspur meanwhile are looking at Barcelona centre-back Samuel Umtiti despite long-term interest from Arsenal and United, with the France international facing a somewhat uncertain future as Barca are keen to move him on this season, while another star defender who appears to be on the market is Juventus’s Matthijs de Ligt, who despite only arriving in Italy at the start of the season is already being linked with a loan move back to Ajax after failing to settle in Turin. United and Chelsea have both been linked with Dinamo and Spain star Dani Olmo. There could also be some big moves across Europe. Real Madrid have been linked with a £68m move for Timo Werner, as well as Flamengo wonder kid Reinier, while Arsenal have turned their eyes to RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano as a long-term target.

It has been reported in The Times this morning that Chelsea have their eye on Brighton defender Lewis Dunk.

The defender is valued at £50m by Brighton and the report suggests Frank Lampard could sanction a move for the 28-year-old.

Chelsea's other option is Nathan Ake, although Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe insisted the defender would not be sold in his pre-match press conference on Friday.

Arsenal and Liverpool both suffered transfer blows this weekend.

Firstly, The Mirror this morning has a story on how Luis Suarez may have scuppered Liverpool's January transfer plans.

The former Red was injured in Barcelona's Spanish Super Cup defeat by Atletico Madrid and will not miss the rest of the season having undergone knee surgery.

That means Ousmane Dembele - a top Liverpool transfer target according to The Mirror - will not be allowed to leave this January.

Arsenal were also dealt a blow when Juventus defender Merih Demiral, who has been persistently linked with the club, was forced off injured during the first-half of Juventus' win over Roma on Sunday night.

"The sensation we have is that it might be a serious injury," manager Maurizio Sarri said after the game.

Arsenal have been linked with Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng this window. But it seems as though they have competition.

Sky Sports this morning claim AC Milan are now monitoring the 31-year-old defender.

If Arsenal can't snap up Boateng this month they could turn their attentions to a rival Premier League club.

Le10 Sport are reporting that they are interested in Watford man Christian Kabasele, who has also been linked with Manchester United, Newcastle and West Ham this month.

Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport have this morning reported that Christian Eriksen has agreed a four-and-a-half year deal with Inter Milan.

They also claim that Inter and Spurs are still discussing a cut-price move this month, with the Denmark international available for a bargain £17m.

He can, of course, leave Spurs on a free transfer in the summer.

Vincent Kompany insists Pep Guardiola is the right man to bring further success to Manchester City - despite seeing his former club fall behind Liverpool in the Premier League title race.

"They have Pep and no matter what, Pep is the right guy," he told Sky Sports News.

"You never say over with City. But it isn't in the hands of City but that is unfortunate but there is so much to look forward to.

"When you look how they have been performing in cups and the Champions League is still a massive target for the club, there is no reason to be disappointed about the season at this stage."
