Reece James rocket helps Chelsea to win over Brighton
There’s work to do for Chelsea if they want to close the gap on Man City and Liverpool says manager Frank Lampard. He told Sky Sports:
"Reece James' goal, it had me off my seat and we needed it, we weren't at our best in that period. Reece has got that in him, he is a player of such quality. You try and get him in areas where he can be a threat.
"I thought we were OK. I liked the work ethic. If you analyse the fact that we've been together as a team for four days, to expect everything to click on day one is difficult. We showed determination and that is a game we might have dropped points in last year.
"I don't want to pin us down to one system. We have three or four players who want to play as a 10 for us but I want us to be adaptable. We have a lot of attacking players, I want us to be fluid, I want that movement.
"We weren't as fluid as we can be today but we will work on that."
Chelsea remain the only opponents Brighton have played a league fixture against without ever winning. They’ve drawn once and lost 10 times.
Speaking to Sky Sports, James added:
"We knew it was going to be tough coming here and we knew we would have to put in everything to get the three points and I think we did that. We had to push up a gear.
"As the games go on we are only to get stronger. There are new players in the team so we have to gel and get stronger week by week.
"When you bring in high level players it brings the competition up and makes everyone work harder to get into the team."
Chelsea goalscorer, Reece James, opened his account in the Premier League with a wonder strike. He told BBC Sport:
"It was my first Premier League Man of the Match and my first Premier League goal and we got the three points so a good evening!
"They [the new signings] are great players and big names so good additions to the team. They will help us move forward.
"It's going to put pressure on everyone and make everybody lift their game. There's more competition in the team and better players so that will help us a lot.
"The aim in football is always to win. Luckily we got off to a good start so hopefully we can keep on improving."
Chelsea get the new season off to a winning start, here’s what we learned from their victory over Brighton:

Five things we learned from Brighton vs Chelsea
90+4 mins: Chelsea sow up the points. Havertz and Werner made their debuts and Chelsea looked better the more the match went on. There’s work still to be done in defence and the goalkeeping position but Chelsea have made a good start to the season.
Brighton were the better team in the first half. They worked their way to an equaliser but ran out of steam in the end.
87 mins: One more goal would put Chelsea to the top of the Premier League but they don’t look too bothered about that. The visitors are just holding onto the ball, moving it from left to right and back again running Brighton around the pitch.
