Manchester City returned to winning ways with a 2-1 success over Chelsea on Saturday at the Etihad Stadium, ending the Londoners' run of six straight wins and keeping Pep Guardiola's side nine points behind leaders Liverpool.

City's loss at Anfield before the international break made this a key game for them but they were made to work for their three points by Frank Lampard's enterprising side.

Chelsea sliced open City's defence in the 22nd minute with Mateo Kovacic superbly picking out N'Golo Kante's forward burst and the French midfielder held off compatriot Benjamin Mendy before smartly slipping the ball past the advancing Ederson.

But six minutes later Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne brought the champions level when the ball fell to him on the edge of the box and he cleverly wrongfooted the Chelsea defence before unleashing a low drive which took two deflections before rattling past wrongfooted Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Chelsea had looked the slicker and sharper of the two teams -- and indeed enjoyed the rare status of having more possession at the Etihad - but it was Guardiola's side who went in with the advantage at the break.

Riyad Mahrez cut in from the left and, with Chelsea's defence backing off, he drove a left-foot shot into the far bottom corner to make it 2-1.

Chelsea nearly put themselves out of the game two minutes before the break when Kepa gifted the ball to Sergio Aguero but the Argentine's shot from distance crashed off the bar.

The Hammers have bloodied the noses of all three London rivals over the last two seasons. Feverish atmospheres are expected for Spurs’ visit on Saturday at lunchtime, the trip to Stamford Bridge a week later and their Monday night duel with Arsenal nine days on but they have more to offer East London than just football:

This is a big day for Tottenham. They are expected to beat West Ham but the Hammers could secure consecutive league wins over Spurs for the first time since 2013-14.

Tottenham have won five of the last six meetings between the sides in all competitions including both Premier League fixtures last season.

But West Ham have scored 53 league goals against Spurs more than versus any other team.

Jose Mourinho will want a result for Spurs but expect it to be a hard fought match.

West Ham are winless in six Premier League matches and Spurs haven't won in five games.

It gets worse for Tottenham who haven't had an away win since January, 12 games ago. They've gone 13 games away from home without a clean sheet.

So today's match will be something of a turn around for whoever can claim the three points.

Manuel Pellegrini has outlined his plans for the match, he told BT Sport:

"First of all we are concentrating on defending. We have conceded six goals and five of them were from set pieces. We need to work on that.

"I don’t have any problems with Jose – he is a special man – he named it himself. He is a good manager, he does well in the Premier League. I feel sad for Mauricio Pochettino he has done so much for the club. I wish Jose a lot of success but after this game."

It is the start of a new era at Tottenham but how do the fans move on from Mauricio Pochettino?

Ten minutes to go until kick off. Will West Ham keep Spurs under wraps or can Jose reignite Tottenham's away form and get their first win since January?

Michael Jones23 November 2019 12:20

Jose Mourinho has lost his last two matches versus Manuel Pellegrini, with his sides conceding six goals.

Tottenham begin the weekend in 14th place, their lowest position after 12 matches since March 2009.

They have kept one league clean sheet this season, a joint-low with Norwich.
