Raheem Sterling opened the scoring against his former club after 12 minutes courtesy of a cute flick by David Silva and a flapping attempted save by Alisson.
However, after Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk both hit the woodwork, Liverpool finally cracked City’s defence in the second half when Joel Matip converted a close-range header to put the match back on level terms. Follow all the action below:

Liverpool 0 - 1 Man City
45+3 mins: Bernardo collects a cross field ball and runs it into the box, he puts a cross in square but there are no blue shirts on the end of it. Liverpool's back four look a little unorganised in this first half.
City lead at the break.
Man City have gone old school with their kit today. No sponsors on the front and I've got to say I'm feeling it.
Here's Kevin De Bruyne showcasing all it's glory:
Liverpool 0 - 1 Man City
Second half: No changes for either team at half time. Man City have been the better side so far and rightly so have a lead. What words of wisdom has Jurgen Klopp given to his team? Will they have an effect?
Not by the look of that. Sterling takes the ball off Alexander-Arnold, runs past him and squares the ball to David Silva. Silva doesn't catch the ball right and sends it over the bar.
Liverpool 0 - 1 Man City
48 mins: A nicely worked play between Rodri and De Bruyne feed the ball to Sterling who runs free off the defence. He's offside but the game continues due to VAR being employed in this match. Sterling takes his shot and hits the post before Liverpool win the free kick.
Liverpool 0 - 1 Man City
51 mins: Alexander-Arnold switches the play out to Robertson but City respond and force the reds to play the ball back to their own defenders. Liverpool move the ball forward quickly and Mo Salah wins a corner.
Liverpool 0 - 1 Man City
54 mins: Alexander-Arnold delivers the ball into the middle of the box, van Dijk keeps the ball in play with a header but Zinchenko is aware enough to head the ball to Bravo. There seems to be more of an urgency and physicality to Liverpool that was missing in the first 45. We could be in for a good finish.
Liverpool 0 - 1 Man City
57 mins: CLOSE! Another Liverpool corner is put into the box from Alexander-Arnold. An in swinger comes into the box and bounces well for van Dijk who turns the ball towards goal, hits the underside of the bar but the ball doesn't go over the line.
Liverpool 0 - 1 Man City
60 mins: Gundogan makes an appearance as David Silva goes off at the hour mark.
Walker clatters Origi to the ground but the referee plays on. He runs forward and sends Sterling free on the break, Sterling sprints into the box, looks for a pass instead of shooting and Alisson takes the ball off him.
Liverpool 0 - 1 Man City
64 mins: Good possession play from Liverpool but they aren't penetrating Man City's defence. What they are doing is making City work hard to win back the ball, a task they not accustomed to.
