England and USA fans prepare for semi-final

England women are out of the Women's World Cup after an agonising semi-final defeat to the USA

Steph Houghton had an 84th-minute penalty saved as the Lionesses missed out on a place in the final, losing 2-1 to the United States in Lyon. Phil Neville's side headed into the last four with dreams of becoming the first senior England team - male or female - to contest a World Cup final since 1966. However, a third penalty miss of the tournament ultimately proved costly after a rollercoaster match.

Here's how it played out:

England 1 - 2 USA

87 mins: What scenes! USA now have a back five. England throw everything at them, Parris, then Daly. Now Kirby, USA block all the shots and get forward. Bright dives in on Morgan and gets a second yellow card, followed by a red.

England down to ten now. It's all going wrong.

England 1 - 2 USA

90+3 mins: The USA's game management has been superb. They've kept the ball in England's half even when they don't control it.

Lucy Bronze puts a tired cross into the box but doesn't best the first player.

90+6 mins: Nikita Parris is booked, England are knackered. Their will is gone, their legs are gone, they've given it everything but it's not going to be enough.

England 1 - 2 USA

A disallowed goal, a VAR penalty saved and sending off. The second half was not favourable to England and it's the USA going through to the World Cup final.

They were the better team in the first half but England recovered to put in a fantastic second half performance.

Heartbreak four years ago for Laura Bassett and heartbreak now for Steph Houghton.

The captain stepped up but couldn't finish the penalty.

Phil Neville's post-match reaction:

"My players gave me everything. We wanted to leave our hearts and souls on the pitch and we did. We've gone toe-to-toe with the best team in the world. They showed great experience at the end, we went down to ten men and just ran out of steam but I asked them to play football the way I wanted them to play.

"I've told them there should be no tears tonight, we should be proud, we've touched the hearts of the nation back home and they've left their hearts on that football field so I'm happy.

"The disallowed goal was offside, we got on with it, we came back and got the penalty. We score them, we miss them, that's football. I can't ask for anything more, we've had the time of our lives and they've played their hearts out."
