Burnley head to Selhurt Park to face Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon, with both teams hoping to get back to winning ways.

The Clarets have failed to win any of the last three after picking up successive wins prior to that, leaving them in 17th place in the Premier League table - though their situation is not as dire as it might be in that position in previous seasons, given the eight-point gap down to Fulham inside the bottom three.

Palace also won back-to-back games recently, but suffered a 2-0 reversal in their last league outing against Leeds to leave them in 13th place in the table.

Roy Hodgson’s men have looked decent at times, attack-minded and fast-flowing with some of their football compared to previous seasons, though consistency has been a real issue and their defensive record hasn’t been exemplary.

Burnley’s real issue is at the other end of the pitch, with a paltry haul of just 14 goals for the campaign being the lowest in the entire league.

Aston Villa have earned 11 Premier League wins in a season for the first time in a decade. They have kept 10 clean sheets in those 11 victories, with the exception being a 7-2 dismantling of Liverpool.

GRAHAM POTTER SPEAKS TO BBC RADIO 5 LIVE

This run has come during an intense period. When you get results it brings a bit more belief and confidence, and things become a bit more easy.

“I’m at the coal face and responsible for the main stat at the end of the match which is who has scored more. What we have struggled with this season is win games.

“We’ve drawn too many against teams in and around us. For us to take the next step we have to be more successful and win those games.

“In this league nobody cares what you did a couple of days ago. Aston Villa have recruited really well and identified areas they were weaker in last season. They’ve added some real quality and got more out of Jack Grealish, who is a fantastic player.”

BRIGHTON VS ASTON VILLA

Brighton are attempting to complete a league double over Aston Villa for the very first time. Their solitary home victory against Villa in the last eight attempts in all competitions was a 1-0 win in the top flight at the Goldstone Ground in December 1980. They’ve drawn four and lost three of the other fixtures.

JOSE MOURINHO’S REACTION

What do I make of the game? A fresh team against a very tired team, but a team that started the game very well. We controlled it, we hit the post, and going 1-0 could give us the fuel you need when you are tired.

“And then they one more of these modern penalties, I call them modern penalties, that put us in a difficult situation.

“I am very, very happy with the players’ attitude. I had guys on the pitch who played two hours a couple of days ago and they gave everything. I had guys in a difficult situation on the pitch but they were brave.

“A team that is not united, not together would give up and would be punished but I saw guys like Harry Kane, Ben Davies, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg giving everything. I have nothing to say against my players, not even a couple of mistakes that are always present.

“A modern penalty is one where even if you touch with a nail it can be a penalty. It depends on the opponent. For some you touch with a nail it is a penalty, and the VAR cannot deny there is a touch with the toe or the nail or the nose. You cannot deny there is contact.

“We had nothing in our favour. But the second half was very difficult.”

RODRI SPEAKS TO SKY SPORTS

It is not easy to beat this type of teams. Tottenham so strong all game but we are so happy with the victory and the three points.

“I was a bit angry the last weeks because we missed many penalties, much more than we expected and big games you have to score penalties.

“I was angry, I grabbed the ball and no one took it from me and fortunately I scored. The win is the most important.

“Goalkeepers know each other, Ederson told me some points about Lloris, I didn’t listen! I was confident in shooting in the way I did.

“We were laughing in the locker room, next penalty for sure I am going to take.

“It is a big step for us but of course it is not over. Many teams can achieve this so we are not expecting anything but to keep going and keep fighting.”
