Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Follow latest live coverage as Arsenal host Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League.

The Gunners need a response after defeat to Crystal Palace a week ago but will be boosted by Tottenham's loss to Bournemouth on Saturday as well as their own victory over Valencia in the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday. They got the perfect start as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored from the spot after Nacho Monreal was fouled in the box.

Solly March's fine run down the left sees him dash into the box and Granit Xhaka tugs him back to concede a penalty. Glenn Murray calmly slots home to draw Brighton level.

With a three-point gap between themselves and Tottenham in fourth, who hold a superior goal difference, their route to the Champions League looks to be purely down to winning the Europa League.

We'll have all the latest throughout the afternoon here.

Solly's on the March down the left, going beyond Stephan Lichtsteiner nicely, but he'll be disappointed with that cross.

His options are limited, yes, but you don't tend to find many teammates waiting for a cross 30 yards from goal on the opposite touchline.

PENALTY! Nacho Monreal tumbles under the challenge of Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Anthony Taylor points to the spot...

It is a challenge from behind, the Iranian doesn't get the ball, and there's a healthy thump into the back of Monreal's legs.

A simple one for Taylor, who was in good position.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang...

GOAL! Arsenal 1-0 Brighton (Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 9 minutes)

Scores!

Confidently thumped into the corner as Mat Ryan goes the wrong way, a front flip for style to celebrate and Arsenal are ahead.

Well the deadlock was fun while it lasted, and from the manner with which Brighton have started I doubt that'll be the last of the afternoon for the home side.

Firmly on top.

Stephan Lichtsteiner thinks he has taken an elbow to the money-maker, gesticulating to the linesman down the right touchline as he prepares to take a throw. Didn't;t see the incident in question, I'll confess, and there hasn't be a replay. Nowt given.

That certainly is a foul. Glenn Murray rakes down the back of Sokratis' upper leg.

Delicious from Sokratis, knocking the ball over a would-be challenger and striding into the Brighton half.

And that's less delicious, a dive that Anthony Taylor has little time for, producing the yellow card in the most dismissive fashion. Sokratis pleads his case, but he's taken a tumble there.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang found the corner with a penalty to put Arsenal ahead...

A penalty that was Taylor made.

(Sorry.)

20 goals on the season for Aubameyang, moving him to joint second on the Premier League's top scorers list. Given he hasn't started every game, that's a fair helping.

Yves Bissouma has taken a bang, but a course of treatment that seemingly includes tossing water against himself like he's preparing for an Olympic swimming final means he is soon back amongst things.

And he earns a free kick in excellent position 25 yards out...
