Leeds vs Chelsea LIVE: Premier League result and final score as woeful Blues fall apart in dismal defeat
Leeds 3-0 Chelsea: Hosts enjoy memorable win over rivals as Brenden Aaronson, Rodrigo and Jack Harrison punished the visitors
Leeds thrashed a dismal Chelsea side 3-0 at a raucous Elland Road for their first win over the Blues in 21 years. The hosts produced a tireless performance under Jesse Marsch as Chelsea suffered their first defeat of the season to continue their underwhelming start.
Edouard Mendy’s error for the opening goal set the tone of the afternoon as Brenden Aaronson robbed the Chelsea goalkeeper of possession before finishing into an empty net. It was followed moments later by Rodrigo’s flying header for his fourth Premier League goal of the season and left Chelsea two goals down at half time.
Tuchel’s side were unable to respond and Jack Harrison added a third later on as Leeds enjoyed a famous victory against their old rivals. It went from bad to worse for Chelsea as Kalidou Koulibaly was sent off for a second yellow card late on.
22’ - Newcastle 0-1 Man City
Yellow card for Cancelo somewhere along the line there. Nick Pope is called upon again to palm away a De Bruyne free-kick.
Straight up the other end Newcastle again get in behind Walker and Almiron this time crosses low for Wilson - he can’t quite get on the end of it and Cancelo’s there to clear.
An early enforced change for Guardiola: Nathan Ake is going off and it’s Ruben Dias who comes on for him.
18’ - Newcastle 0-1 Man City
What a huge chance for Almiron. Joelinton and Saint-Maximin to brilliantly to create space and the latter cuts it back for Almiron...who leans back and blazes his shot absolutely miles off-target.
Some joy down the flanks for the Magpies early on, but they’ll have to make the most of these chances.
16’ - Newcastle 0-1 Man City
Joelinton clatters Gundogan - the City captain is wreaking havoc in these early stages.
No booking this time but another set piece for the visitors, who look like carving Newcastle open with every attack at the moment.
The free-kick is well-defended but Foden has a shooting chance soon after, again saved by Pope and his feet.
12’ - Newcastle 0-1 Man City
Haaland frees De Bruyne and it looks very much as though he may stride through to double the lead - but one touch is slightly wayward and his shot is awkward as a result. Pope saves with his feet and Newcastle escape.
Gundogan then nearly tees up Haaland but his attempted shot is mis-hit.
9’ - Newcastle 0-1 Man City
Guimaraes fouls De Bruyne as the Belgian skips past him in midfield and it’s an early yellow card for the Newcastle midfielder. Pretty well justified, was never going for the ball.
City quickly into their rhythm here and spreading play wide to create angles at every opportunity.
That was the first goal Newcastle have conceded this season, by the way.
GOAL! 5’ - Newcastle 0-1 Man City
All too easy for City! Rodri blazes over from range just after Haaland had almost been played in down the inside left channel. But minutes later Bernardo swings over a cross from the right and Gundogan is totally unmarked and controls on the right foot before a simple finish with the left past Pope for 1-0.
3’ - Newcastle 0-0 Man City
A short corner routine is worked back to Trippier for a deep cross which almost lands under the crossbar and forces Ederson to leap back and claim it against his post.
Stones and Ake as the City centre-back partnership - nothing wrong with the quality of it but definitely not a first-choice pairing for Guardiola.
1’ - Newcastle 0-0 Man City
We are underway at St. James’ Park! Fans in fine voice and perhaps sensing the chance of an upset today.
Newcastle vs Man City latest news
Teams are out, crowd is raucous. We are very close to kick-off and this should be a terrific encounter between two teams unbeaten at the start of this season. Lots of off-pitch overlapping these days between the clubs too of course.
Pep Guardiola says City transfer business is done for the summer
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has said that he does not expect his side to do any more business in the transfer window.
Sergio Gomez became the football club’s fifth arrival of the summer this week, following Julian Alvarez, Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips and Stefan Ortega.
“If someone moves or there is a problem, we don’t expect, maybe it happens, but apparently it’s done,” Guardiola confirmed in a press conference.
