From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

England begin their Uefa Nations League campaign against Spain on Saturday night as Gareth Southgate’s side look to build on the momentum from their World Cup campaign, with the 2020 European Championship already on the horizon.

Southgate is already looking towards that tournament after bringing in new faces to his squad, with Luke Shaw and Alex McCarthy brought into the side, while Jamie Vardy and Gary Cahill have retired from international football and both Adam Lallana and Raheem Sterling have withdrawn due to injury.

The match is the first to take place in Group 4 of the Nations League, with Croatia making up the three-team line-up, but England do not face Croatia until next month. The group stage sees team play each other home and away, with the table-toppers going on to next June’s semi-finals and the nation who finishes bottom relegated to League B.

56 mins: England 1 - 2 Spain

Shaw has been replaced by Danny Rose, there was a round of applause as he left the field and the game is back underway, Alonso whips the ball into England's area Dele Alli half-heartedly attempts to clear it but it falls to Thiago who hits it with his right but it narrowly goes over the bar

Chief football writer Miguel Delaney at Wembley:

"The Shaw collision happened right in front of us, and looked nasty as it happened. He had an oxygen mask and what looked a neck brace on as he was stretchered off. Real pity, as he had been one of England's best players, after one of his best spells of club form for some time. Hope it's nothing serious."

Football reporter Jack Pitt-Brooke at Wembley:

"England were under pressure in the first half but I don't think their gameplan was too far wrong. They got the ball forward quickly, tried to get in behind Spain and did well to take the lead. The problem is that they are always playing with fire trying to get through that press and Spain's players are just technically better than theirs. And when England make simple defensive errors, as they did for both Spain goals, they are only making their life more difficult. To win playing like this, they need to be perfect."

58 mins: England 1 - 2 Spain

The crowd is trying to get a bit of momentum back into the game, they're chanting and drumming to an upbeat tempo but England still look a little sluggish

60 mins: England 1 - 2 Spain

Spain have had the better of the second half so far, Thiago receives the ball on the right and he whips it into the box, Alonso gets in the end of it before giving it to Ramos who hits it first time as he flies into the box, it's straight at Pickford who saves it easily

64 mins: England 1 - 2 Spain

Trippier finds Harry Kane with a lovely little ball over the top of the defence, but the England captain snatches at it sends it wide, he was ruled offside so it wouldn't have counted anyway

67 mins: England 1 - 2 Spain

John Stones makes a great last ditch tackle, diving forward and getting to the ball before Rodrigo, his reward is a yellow card and a Spanish free kick on the edge of the box...

... Isco takes it, finds the wall and it's cleared away

72 mins: England 1 - 2 Spain

During the World Cup, England's intensity seemed to slack towards the back end of all their games, being a goal behind they can't afford for that to happen tonight, they put together a series of decent passes but a Rashford pass to Trippier is too heavy and Spain have a throw in

75 mins: England 1 - 2 Spain

Ramos makes a good tackle on Rashford but England have a throw in in Spain's half, the visitiors press high though and force England back into their own half, England need to create a bit of zip here, their play is slow and they need to stretch the Spanish defenders

Michael Jones8 September 2018 21:18

77 mins: England 1 - 2 Spain

Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard see some of the ball and create England's first chance of the second half, they link up well on the edge of the area before Alli gives it to Rashford, he tries a shot from the edge of the area and it's an easy save for De Gea
