What is the Ballon d’Or?
The Ballon d’Or is an annual award presented by the magazine France Football to the best player of the year, as voted by sports journalists. The award has been running since 1956 making it one of the most prestigious individual accolades out there. Initially for European players, the honour went global in 2007.
Between 2010 and 2015 it was merged with Fifa’s own World Player of the Year award. That agreement ended in 2016, however, with the governing body reintroducing its own accolade once again – ‘The Best’ Fifa Men’s Player.
Who is the favourite?
Ronaldo is once again the favourite to claim the award, having notably helped lead Real Madrid to a historic Champions League title earlier this year. Messi follows in second with the usual suspects also among the mix.

Ramos dismisses talk of Ronaldo rift
Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos rubbished reports that there is a rift between him and team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo earlier this week.
There have been claims in the Spanish media that the pair no longer see eye-to-eye following a series of dressing room disagreements.
Ronaldo’s very public questioning of Real’s transfer policy is said to have annoyed Ramos, while it was rumoured Ronaldo was left annoyed by his captain’s desire to see Neymar quit PSG for the Bernabéu.
However, Ramos has moved to publicly rubbish any talk of a rift between the pair.
Ramos told TVE: “Nothing has ever happened between him and me. There has always been a great friendship between us.
“We have a lot of personality and have some different opinions, but we're pulling in the same direction.”
Both players are on the shortlist to win the Ballon d'Or.
