From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Iceland secured a comeback draw against Wales in the Nations League in a match of two halves played out in the cold conditions of Reykjavik.

Wales started the game as the more aggressive and competant side. They were free flowing and in control of the ball in the midfield areas. This dominance resulted in two eerily similar goals. Neco Williams with a long ball over the top, Harry Wilson with a run from deep in behind the defence.

Wilson’s first effort was cleared off the line by Hakon Rafn Valdimarsson only for Brennan Johnson to tap in the rebound. The second effort was coolly dispatched by the midfielder meaning the Dragons led 2-0 at half-time.

But they never got going again. Substitutions and an intense press from Iceland saw them turn the game around. The hosts were unafraid to shoot from even half-decent positions and Logi Tomasson netted twice to draw level. From there Wales were clinging on and managed to keep out the hosts to earn themselves a good point.

GOAL! Iceland 1-2 Wales ( Logi Tomasson, 69’)

Iceland have one back!

Danny Ward makes a good save and turns the ball out of play. A quick corner comes across to Logi Tomasson who darts into the box and pokes it into the far bottom corner.

Iceland are back in this game and they’re dominating.

Iceland 0-2 Wales

67 mins: In the other Group B4 match Turkey are still being held in a 0-0 draw against Montenegro. That means as things stand Wales are heading top of the group.

They haven’t clicked in this second half. Iceland have gotten themselves on top.

Iceland 0-2 Wales

63 mins: Ollie Cooper takes a shot for Wales and forces a save out of Valdimarsson. It’s the first thing of note Wales have done in the half but it was easy for the Iceland goalkeeper.

Iceland 0-2 Wales

60 mins: Jordan James lets the ball run away from him and lunges into a tackle trying to get it back. He clatters into Thordarson and hits the midfielder on the shin whilst trying to pull his legs away.

It’s a yellow card offence and a free kick to Iceland.

Iceland 0-2 Wales

57 mins: There are more and more mistakes creeping into Wales’ play as Iceland push to get a goal back. Thorsteinsson turns the ball wide of the goal but wants a corner that never comes.

Save!

Oskarsson again, collects the ball, turns, shoots and forces a strong save out of Danny Ward who clings onto the ball leaping across to his left.

Iceland 0-2 Wales

54 mins: Oh dear!

Iceland should have scored. Oskarsson brings long ball down and skips inside of Ben Davies before slipping in Ellertsson. He’s only got the goalkeeper to beat but boots the effort over the target.

Wales were cut open again.

Iceland 0-2 Wales

51 mins: Close!

Wow. Wales have started slowly as Mikael Egill Ellertsson comes close to pulling a goal back with a slotted finish that just skips wide of the target.

Orri Oskarsson comes even closer after spinning just outside the box then rattling a shot at goal. Danny Ward can’t get there but the ball strikes the crossbar and bounces over the top.

Iceland 0-2 Wales

48 mins: If Wales keep a clean sheet tonight they the three points are theirs. That’s obviously of course and Bellamy will have told his team to keep up their energy levels and try to control the game.

Another goal would kill off the Iceland belief.

Second half! Iceland 0-2 Wales

Wales get the match back underway with a two-goal advantage. At the break Craig Bellamy has made a change with Brennan Johnson replaced with Wes Burns.

HT Iceland 0-2 Wales

Craig Bellamy is unbeaten in his two games in charge (one win, one draw) and could become the first Wales boss to avoid defeat in each of his first three competitive matches.
