England travel to Helsinki to face Finland at the Olympic Stadium in the Nations League.

The Three Lions enter the match off the back of a humbling 2-1 defeat to Greece at Wembley last time out, and they now sit three points behind the Greeks in the League B Group 2 table at the halfway stage.

Finland are bottom of the table, having gained no points across three games, and lost 2-1 to Ireland in Helsinki last week.

Interim England boss Lee Carsley is under scrutiny after his experimental, striker-less line-up against Greece failed miserably, so his selection will be scrutinised closely with Harry Kane coming back into the starting XI as a recognised No 9.

No real attacking threat from either side yet. Finland’s press is forcing England backwards more than they’d like though.

It is indeed Alexander-Arnold at left-back in the early stages. England are happy to just keep possession at the moment.

The teams are coming out of the tunnel at the Olympic Stadium and we’re around five minutes from kick-off.

Can England produce a dominant display to dispel the doubts around Lee Carsley? He may claim he never applied for the permanent job anyway, but a big win here would do his reputation no harm.

England match stats

England are unbeaten in each of their previous 12 meetings with Finland, winning 10 and drawing two. This is the joint-most they have faced a nation without ever suffering defeat (level with Bulgaria – P12 W8 D4).

England have lost two of their last four competitive fixtures, which is more defeats than they suffered across their 20 previous such games.

Eight of the Three Lions’ last 11 competitive losses have come in the UEFA Nations League.

England are unbeaten in their last six away games in all competitions, winning four and drawing two. They last had a longer such run between March 2013 and October 2015 (12 in a row).

Jude Bellingham has been directly involved in eight goals in his last 12 England appearances (five goals, three assists); since the start of 2023 only Harry Kane (15) has scored more goals for the Three Lions than the Real Madrid man (five – level with Bukayo Saka).

Finland match stats

Finland host England for the first time since October 2000 - a goalless draw in a World Cup qualifier. The Finns have drawn two of their last three home games with the Three Lions, losing the most recent in September.

Finland have only lost two of their 10 home games in the UEFA Nations League, winning six and drawing two, although one of those did come last time out against the Republic of Ireland.

The home side have lost each of their last three games (all in the UEFA Nations League) and could lose four in a row for the first time since March 2016.

Finland’s Joel Pohjanpalo has scored six goals in his last eight home international starts, including last time out against the Republic of Ireland – each of the striker’s last six goals for his country have come at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium.

It looks cold in Helsinki tonight... which could be good news for Cole Palmer.
