Man United v Reading: FA Cup match preview

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's winning start to life at the Manchester United helm continued but the FA Cup third-round triumph against embattled Reading was the caretaker manager's most unconvincing performance to date.

United racked up their fifth straight victory since the Norwegian replaced Jose Mourinho, although the Royals provided a test that belied their place five points adrift of safety in the Championship.

Reading arrived at Old Trafford without a win in their previous 10 matches but proved a handful on an afternoon that saw United emerge 2-0 victors thanks to Juan Mata's penalty - after a lengthy video assistant referee delay - and a cool Romelu Lukaku strike.

12 minutes: Chelsea 0-0 Nottingham Forest

Alvaro Morata surely has to score from there!

Zappacosta whips in a brilliant cross from the right and Morata, six yards out, heads straight at Steele who does well to parry it clear.

GOAL! Everton 2-0 Lincoln City (Bernard 14')

13 minutes: Chelsea 0-0 Nottingham Forest

Chelsea have a free-kick five yards outside the box, but Emerson's effort is just over the bar.

Looks like Steele had it covered.

15 minutes: Chelsea 0-0 Nottingham Forest

Was that a foul on Morata?

Morata is played through on goal by Fabregas' lofted pass, and Claudio Yacob comes across and seems to trip the Spaniard. The referee doesn't give a foul, but Morata wants VAR...

On we go.

18 minutes: Chelsea 0-0 Nottingham Forest

Big chance for Hudson-Odoi at the back-post, but in fairness his low shot is brilliantly blocked by Tendayi Darikwa.

Chelsea well on top now.

19 minutes: Chelsea 0-0 Nottingham Forest

From an out-swinging corner, Morata's header is cleared off the line!

Surely Chelsea have to take one of these chances soon!

GOAL! Bolton 0-1 Walsall (Cook 19')

GOAL! Everton 2-1 Lincoln (Bostwick 26')

28 minutes: PENALTY TO CHELSEA! Chelsea 0-0 Nottingham Forest

Loftus-Cheek is clearly fouled by Danny Fox in the box. Stonewall.

It'll be Fabregas to take...
