Man United v Reading: FA Cup match preview

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's winning start to life at the Manchester United helm continued but the FA Cup third-round triumph against embattled Reading was the caretaker manager's most unconvincing performance to date.

United racked up their fifth straight victory since the Norwegian replaced Jose Mourinho, although the Royals provided a test that belied their place five points adrift of safety in the Championship.

Reading arrived at Old Trafford without a win in their previous 10 matches but proved a handful on an afternoon that saw United emerge 2-0 victors thanks to Juan Mata's penalty - after a lengthy video assistant referee delay - and a cool Romelu Lukaku strike.

Two quick-fire goals for Boro!

GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Nottingham Forest (Morata 49')

Alvaro Morata finally finishes a chance off, as Hudson-Odoi's wicked low cross from the right is converted at the near post by Morata, who couldn't miss!

Forest's resillience is broken.

GOAL! Aston Villa 0-2 Swansea (Dyer 47')

54 minutes: Chelsea 1-0 Nottingham Forest

Hudson-Odoi dribbles into the box, and his low near-post shot is just about saved by Steele's left-hand.

That keeps them in it... for now.

55 minutes: Chelsea 1-0 Nottingham Forest

First real chance for Forest!

A cross in from the right lacks pace, but it does find the head of Daryl Murphy on the penalty spot, but he can't generate any pace to trouble Chelsea's Willy Caballero.

57 minutes: Chelsea 1-0 Nottingham Forest

First change for the visitors, as Joe Lolley comes on for Matty Cash.

58 minutes: Chelsea 1-0 Nottingham Forest

It's eventually given offside, but how does Morata miss!

Barkley crosses for the Spaniard, who somehow misses an open goal from three yards out. The linesman's flag saves him!

GOAL! Chelsea 2-0 Nottingham Forest (Morata 59')

A minute after missing a sitter, Morata this time leaps up and heads into the near-post.

That should be enough for the Blues!
