From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Jose Mourinho was given a bloody nose by his former midfielder Frank Lampard as Derby deservedly sent 10-man Manchester United crashing out of the Carabao Cup on penalties.

A night that started with fresh questions over Paul Pogba's future ended with one of the best players that the Portuguese has ever worked with securing the finest win of his short managerial career.

Derby looked to have secured victory inside 90 minutes after substitute Jack Marriott followed up the exceptional Harry Wilson free-kick that cancelled out Juan Mata's early goal, only for Marouane Fellaini to direct home deep into stoppage time to snatch a 2-2 draw.

But former Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson proved the Sky Bet Championship side's shootout hero, saving Phil Jones' attempt to secure an 8-7 triumph at a stunned Old Trafford.

Team News:

Frank Lampard meets his old friend Jose Mourinho for the first time as a manager tonight at Old Trafford but it may be a tougher reunion than he's hoping for.

Lampard manages a Derby County side that have never beaten Man Utd in the League Cup, losing twice in 1970 and 2009.

"[Mourinho] is a manager who was hugely influential on my career twice - but particularly the first time around," said Lampard.

"I respect him completely for that. You will find Jose Mourinho's players being managers all over the place because he has been so successful in his career.

"They're expected to win, quite rightly so with the squad they've amassed there. It's a challenge for us and we want to go there and do as well as we can."

Jose Mourinho has been lamenting on his enjoyment of cup football.

"I like the feeling of the knockout," he said. "You win, you are in the competition; you lose, you are out. I like that pressure and honestly I think fans also like it.

"In this moment, you don't even have the possibility of playing 30 more minutes after a draw - you go straight to a penalty shootout, which obviously is a 50/50 situation.

"So there is a better chance for the teams not considered favourites, which brings more possibility of killing giants."

We're 5 minutes away from kick off at Old Trafford.

Carabao Cup third round.

Man Utd vs Derby County.

Mourinho vs Lampard.

Let's do this...!

Man Utd 0 - 0 Derby

Man Utd start the match, Derby press high and win the ball, Wilson gets it from Mount and whips a cross into the box, no-ones there and it goes out of play.

2 mins: GOAL! Man Utd 1 - 0 Derby - Mata

Martial gets the ball as it's delivered over the head of Derby right back Bogle, he runs down the wing before pulling the ball back to Lukaku who's run into the box. Lukaku backheels the ball into the path of Lingard who passes it to Mata. Mata's all on his own in the box and he hits a curling left-footed strike into the bottom corner to give United the lead

5 mins: Man Utd 1 - 0 Derby

Chance for Derby! Mount has the ball on the left just in front of United's box, he plays the ball through the defence and Bennett comes storming into the box from the right, he hits it first time and Romero gets low and makes the save.
