From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The first leg of this EFL Cup semi-final saw Bristol City give Manchester City one of the biggest frights of their relatively serene season.

Lee Johnson's team still lost 2-1, we shouldn't forget, but they showed enough to suggest there will be no easy ride for Manchester City into the final of the competition.

Pep Guardiola will continue with a slightly rotated team while Johnson will not be holding anything back at Ashton Gate. If the home side can resist conceding an early goal, it could just develop into a memorable night.

23' - Oleksandr Zinchenko tries his luck from distance but the City full-back's 20-yard effort goes wide of Luke Steele's near post.

28' - That's superb goalkeeping.

David Silva overlaps Leroy Sane in the inside left channel and is picked out by the German before unleashing a driven low shot across goal. However, Robins 'keeper Luke Steele makes a really good save down low to his left to keep the score level on the night.

35' - Fernandinho tells his Manchester City teammates he's had enough of their patient build-up play as he attempts to break the deadlock from 30 yards. Perhaps expectedly, the ball sails well over the crossbar.

37' - Aden Flint gets his head to Hordur Magnusson's long throw-in but the Bristol City defender can't get enough power behind his header and Claudio Bravo catches the ball comfortably.

39' - Kevin De Bruyne plays a really tidy one-two with David Silva on the edge of the area but follows it up with a poor shot that dribbles wide of Luke Steele's near post.

Manchester City's John Stones controls the ball under pressure from Bristol City's Bobby Reid

41' - Bernardo Silva crafts an opportunity for himself as he jinks into the penalty area and onto his left foot. However, his drilled shot deflects straight at Luke Steele.

GOAL! Bristol City 0-1 Manchester City (Agg: 1-3) (Sane)

43' - Hordur Magnusson dithers on the ball inside the Bristol City penalty area and that allows Bernardo Silva to dispossess him. The ball then deflects into the path of Leroy Sane, who powers a shot home with his right foot from 12 yards.

That goal could've been so easily avoided if Magnusson had just cleared his lines.
