Meanwhile Luton Town are making their first appearance in the Premier League, having risen from non-league in an incredible decade of progress. They followed Championship winners Burnley and second-placed Sheffield United in earning promotion to the top flight.

It has been a pulsating first half at Goodison Park, where a former Everton man has come back to haunt his old side. Richarlison opened the scoring after just four minutes with a well-taken volley. Calvert-Lewin levelled on the half-hour mark when he headed in from close range, but Richarlison restored Spurs' lead four minutes before the break with a wonderful curling 20-yard strike. On both occasions, the Brazil forward refused to celebrate against his former employers, who must look to respond after the break.
