Everton and Newcaslte played out an entertaining 0-0 draw at Goodison Park. The visitors were the more controlling side and should have won the game after James Tarkowski dragged Sandro Tonali down in the box midway through the first half.
It was a clear penalty kick and, following a VAR intervention, the visitors had the opportunity to go ahead. Newcastle were awarded the spot kick but Anthony Gordon’s effort was kept out by a fabulous save from Jordan Pickford.
Gordon was a threa throughout and made life hard for his old club with his pace and skill at the top of the match. If truth it was an even contest.
Both managers attempted to change the momentum with substitutes from the bench but they had little effect and neither team could press on to win.

41 mins: Newcastle swing in their sixth corner of the game but Pickford is on hand to punch it clear. The loose ball is recycled back to Joelinton who then goes for goal and smokes it high and wide.

Anthony Gordon is the man to take the penalty kick. He rolls it low to Jordan Pickford’s left but the Everton No.1 dives the correct way and keeps it out!
What a moment. Goodison Park erupts and the momentum has swung again.

James Tarkowski is punished after a VAR check. He drags Sandro Tonali to the floor as Newcastle get the ball into the box. It’s a clear foul and the visitors are awarded a spot kick.
The Everton supporters aren’t happy.

26 mins: Gordon’s pace is causing a lot of problems for Everton’s defence. He’s quick and accurate and it feels like a matter of time before he breaks down his old team.

22 mins: Anthony Gordon is being jeered each time he gets a touch. The former Everton striker is the driving force behind Newcastle’s attack today but doesn’t have the strongest record against his old club.

A perfect run from Abdulaye Doucoure sees him nip around the back of the Newcastle defence as James Garner sweeps in a cross. He meets it and beats Nick Pope only for VAR to find that he was offside.
Heart-breaking for Everton.

Ashley Young slides a pass down the line and picks out Dominic Calvert-Lewin. He dances inside and skips away from Newcastle’s slow centre-backs.
The forward takes the ball to the edge of the box and shoots but hits the ball straight at Nick Pope who keeps it out.

12 mins: There’s was a collective intake of breath after Jordan Pickford missed Bruno Guimaraes’ shot. The fact that Newcastle aren’t ahead yet is massive for the Everton supporters but they are less vocal.
That change in atmosphere could have an effect on the home side.
