Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling scored either side of Sergio Aguero's penalty miss as Manchester City beat Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 on Tuesday for a second straight victory in Group F of the Champions League.

By seeing his penalty saved by goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov, Aguero missed a chance to join Eric Brook as City's all-time record scorer on 177 goals. It didn't end up costing the English club, though.

De Bruyne, playing in a deeper midfield role this season, has been central to City's great start to the Premier League and in Europe this season, but hadn't yet scored.

He ended that barren run in the 48th minute by collecting David Silva's short pass across the face of the penalty area and curling a shot into the top corner.

Sterling came on as a substitute and clinched victory in the 90th minute, crashing a finish in off the crossbar after Bernardo Silva had broken the offside trap down the right.

What times does it start?

The game kicks off at 7.45pm (BST) at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday 26 September.

Where can I watch it?

BT Sport 3 and BT Sport 4K UHD will be broadcasting the game.

It’s a big game for…

Kyle Walker. The England full-back admitted this week that he cannot keep up with his left-sided teammate Benjamin Mendy’s “banter” on social media. “If you know me relatively well, I do like a bit of banter,” he said. “He started it! He came for me first. He is just relentless.” With Mendy sitting on the sidelines for this game through injury, you can be sure the Frenchman’s thumbs will be twitching at any hint of a Walker mistake. Walker had better be on his game.

Player to watch…

John Stones. The Englishman has scored three goals in his last three games in this competition – all headers from corners. Can he do it again?

Form…

Manchester City: WWWWW

Shakhtar: WDWWW

Odds…

Manchester City: 1/5

Draw: 13/2

Shakhtar: 12/1

That's all from us this evening. Make sure you tune in again tomorrow evening for coverage of Manchester United vs CSKA Moscow and Chelsea vs Atletico Madrid.
