Man City v Hoffenheim: Champions League match preview

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Leroy Sane struck twice as Manchester City came from behind to secure top spot in Champions League Group F with a 2-1 win over Hoffenheim.

Sane cancelled out former Leicester striker Andrej Kramaric's early penalty with a stunning free-kick just before half time and grabbed his second on the hour.

City also hit the woodwork twice as they created numerous chances after making a sluggish start.

Pep Guardiola's side, who gave valuable experience to 18-year-old Phil Foden, dominated the second half and Sane could have had a hat-trick had he not passed up another shooting chance.

GOALL!!! Manchester City 1-1 Hoffenheim (Sane)

WHAT A STRIKE!

Is there anything this player can't do?

Right on the cusp of half time with City staring a half time deficit in the face, the German winger lines up a 30-yard free-kick and strikes it Ronaldo esque with the top of his foot.

His shot dips and swerves and beats the keeper who was helpless.

Moments later, the referee blows for half time.

Kyle Walker is coming on for Manchester City in the second half.

United have got the game underway and have started with a bit more purpose as Pogba searches for Lukaku quickly..

46 mins: OH DEAR! Valencia 2-0 Man United (O.G Jones)

United's early purpose has been sucker punched by Valencia.

Well, it was United's own doing to be honest as the ball is played forwards for Batshuayi.

As Jones tries to deal with it, he has no communication with Romero with the keeper rushing out.

The English centre halves impact was to turn the goal beyond the onrushing keeper and he will be very embarrassed now.

47 mins: It was that man Soler with the impressive pass through the gap, again.

A great performance this evening.

Lato replaced by Garay for Valencia.

In the midst of the early drama, Rojo has been replaced by Ashley Young.

Manchester United will need a miracle to finish top of the group now, but if we're al being realistic, they really don't deserve to win it anyway.

Tonight's performance has so far been truly truly horrible.

53 mins: CHANCE CITY!

Really end to end game at the Etihad as City and Hoffenheim are both doing their bit to grab another goal.

It's a really entertaining spectacle and Jesus has the most recent chance of the game, beating the defenders at the byline and sending in a weird shot from a tight angle that almost gives City the lead.

55 mins: CHANCE CITY!

It should be 2-1 but they somehow confuse themselves and miss.

Sterling, Sane and Silva combine on the counter attack and are clear, 3 on 1 but they try and pass it in to the goal and by the end, Silva's shot is blocked for a corner.

Crazy play and Guardiola has his head in his hands.
