Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

From five to two, the Premier League participation was whittled down in the last 16, and will be halved again come semi-final time, as Liverpool and Manchester City come to a head.

Pep Guardiola’s juggernaut are the favourites for this year’s crown given their dominance but, much like how PSG wanted to avoid Real, City will have wanted to avoid Liverpool, the team whose strengths marry up to their weaknesses perfectly.

Guardiola branded the triumvirate of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino “almost unstoppable” but will hope the “almost” part of that assertion is more true than the “unstoppable” bit given that the weakest part of City’s game – if it can be called that – is their defence. Both sides seem to have their Premier League positions sewn up so expect a European classic, but don’t call a Liverpool victory a shock – this one really could go either way.

BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand reckons Liverpool need a positive result tonight if they are to stand any chance of progressing to the last four.

"Klopp is one of a handful of managers who doesn't feel inferior to Guardiola.

"He believes in his own tactics but I think they have to come away with a good result here to go into next week's game at the Etihad."

Kevin De Bruyne is the favourite to win the Premier League's Player of the Year award but the Manchester City man says Mo Salah would be a deserving winner of the award.

De Bruyne told BT Sport

"I voted for Salah. He deserves it if somebody from our team doesn't win it.

"He's up there with Kane, me and David [Silva]."

There is another Champions League match taking place tonight and that's in Catalonia, where Barcelona are entertaining Roma.

Pep Guardiola has had this to say about the attack that Manchester City's team bus was subject to upon the team's arrival at Anfield:

"We didn't expect that after what happened last season in Dortmund. I thought the police would know that.

"Fortunately nothing happened to the players' health.

"I know that this is not Liverpool, I know that the history of this club is bigger than four or five guys. Hopefully it doesn't happen again."

Pre-match quotes from both managers

Jurgen Klopp: "You cannot only be smart tonight. You need to involve passion in the game. We need to be well-orientated and use the spaces. City changed the formation a little bit so that shows that they want to do something tonight here."

Pep Guardiola: "In football you have to try to play. We've got to be cautious when they have the ball. We have to defend when they have the ball and we have to attack and score goals when we have it."

Official Liverpool statement

"The club condemns in the strongest possible terms the scenes which preceded our Champions League quarter-final, which resulted in damage being inflicted on the Manchester City team bus during their arrival at Anfield.

"We apologise unreservedly to Pep Guardiola, his players, staff and officials caught up in the incident.

"The behaviour of a number of individuals was completely unacceptable and the club will cooperate fully with the authorities to identify those responsible.

"The priority now is to establish the facts and offer Manchester City whatever support is necessary."

The players are out on the pitch at Anfield and kick-off is just moments away!

1' - The referee gets the game underway.

This should be really, really tasty.

4' - Decent start by City, this.

They've dominated possession in these early stages and that might be their plan for the next 10 minutes or so in an attempt to quieten this noisy Anfield crowd.
