From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Mohamed Salah scored a solo goal and Alisson produced a crucial late save as Liverpool fc beat Napoli 1-0 to clinch a place in the Champions League's knockout stage at the expense of the Italian side.
Salah shrugged off one defender, drifted past another with a superb feint, and delivered a low finish inside the near post from an acute angle for the winning goal in the 34th minute.
Liverpool came into the game knowing a 1-0 victory, or any other win by a two-goal margin, would guarantee a spot in the round of 16 as the English team looks to go one better than last season.
Paris Saint-Germain, who won 4-1 at Red Star Belgrade on Tuesday, advanced as Group C winner, and Napoli had to settle for third place and dropping into the Europa League for the second straight season.
It would have been Liverpool missing out had Alisson not produced a reflex save to deny Arkadiusz Milik in the second minute of stoppage time. Re-live the action below:
Scores elsewhere...
Neymar has doubled PSG's lead against Red Star Belgrade and that should assure the French side of progression from the group. Liverpool would currently join them in the last 16 on goals scored.
It remains 1-0 to PSV at the San Siro, and thus with Inter Milan surprisingly behind, Tottenham would also be in the draw for the knockout stages as things stand.
Good news for fans of both English sides, then, but things could change rather quickly in the second half...
Sergio Busquets has replaced Ivan Rakitic for Barcelona, and the second half is underway.
Barcelona 1-0 Tottenham, 47 minutes
Moussa Sissoko charges away down the right and it appears he can carry the ball into the box, but the Frenchman instead tries to find Harry Kane with an early ball, which is simply cut out.
Christian Eriksen then forces Jasper Cillessen into a diving save. Good beginning to the half from Spurs.
Liverpool 1-0 Napoli, 46 minutes
Strong start from Liverpool, too.
Sadio Mane threads a pass through to free Andrew Robertson down the left, and the Scotsman wins a corner, which David Ospina collects under some pressure.
Barcelona 1-0 Tottenham, 50 minutes
More positive play from Spurs.
Harry Kane ignores Heung-min Son and instead crosses for Christian Eriksen.
The Dane has his shot blocked and Clement Lenglet heroically throws himself in front of Dele Alli's crisp volley on the rebound.
Barcelona 1-0 Tottenham, 51 minutes
Another Spurs chance.
This time Kane breaks beyond the Barcelona defence but his shot is rather wild in the end under pressure from Lenglet.
Kane looked questioningly to the Serbian referee but there wasn't enough contact to warrant a penalty being awarded.
Liverpool 1-0 Napoli, 50 minutes
Mohamed Salah drags a shot to the right of the near post with his left foot. Not the cleanest hit, and Salah will perhaps feel he could have done better.
Barcelona 1-0 Tottenham, 54 minutes
Brilliant incisive running with the ball from Ousmane Dembele, causing Danny Rose and Jan Vertonghen fits, beating the pair and cutting the ball back.
It is to nobody in particular but Philippe Coutinho drops to the edge of the box to collect it. The Brazilian unfurls a powerful drive but Kyle Walker-Peters does superbly to throw his left leg in front of it and block away.
A lively start to the second half.
Barcelona 1-0 Tottenham, 56 minutes
And another chance for Spurs!
Strong interplay between a number of attacking Tottenham players and space opens up for Heung-min Son in the 'D' on the edge of the box.
He scored superbly with his left foot against Leicester on Saturday but can't produce something similar on this occasion, Jasper Cillessen flopping to his right to smother Son's shot.
