Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.La Liga leaders Barcelona slumped to a shock first loss of the season on Wednesday, suffering a 2-1 defeat at struggling Leganes after conceding twice in two second-half minutes as coach Ernesto Valverde's squad rotation backfired.
Philippe Coutinho gave the champions the lead in the 12th minute with a classy volley and Lionel Messi smacked a shot against the bar as Barca, resting Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez, made a strong start against Leganes, who began the game bottom of the table.
Barca's comfortable hold on the game dramatically fell apart shortly after the interval when Nabil El Zhar headed home a looping cross in the 52nd minute and 20-year-old Oscar Rodriguez turned in a second goal barely sixty seconds later to the joy of the 12,000 fans crammed into the Butarque stadium.
When is it?
Leganes vs Barcelona kicks off at 19:00 BST at Leganes’ Estadio Municipal de Butarque, and Real Madrid’s clash against Sevilla begins at 21:00 BST.
Where can I watch it?
La Liga matches are not broadcast on normal television in the UK, instead they are shown live on online streaming service Eleven Sports. The streaming service is priced at £5.99 a month, or £59.99 for an annual pass.
Good evening and welcome to The Independent's live coverage of tonight's offering of European football. Real Madrid and Barcelona are flying high in La Liga, and Juventus are in hot form in Serie A, but could this come to an end tonight?
19:00 Leganes vs Barcelona
21:00 Sevilla vs Real Madrid
20:00 Juventus vs Bologna
Up first, it's Leganes vs Barcelona! Here's how the teams line up...
It's a big night for Lionel Messi as well, who, in 16 minutes, will play his 700th game for Barcelona. You wouldn't bet against him capping it with a goal now, would you?
There is just two goals separating Barcelona and Real Madrid at the top of La Liga so far this season, with both teams dropping just the two points so far. Will we see this imperious form continue tonight? Considering Barca have won their last five games against Leganes, it seems set for an away win.
Here we go then! Incidentally Messi also needs five goals to reach 600 for Barcelona. Surely not...
Leganes vs Barcelona
2 mins: Barcelona are starting with Thomas Vermaelen out on the left side of the back four as the Catalans probe away at their bottom-of-the-table rivals.
Leganes vs Barcelona
6 mins: Dembele gets away the first shot on goal as he receives the ball wide on the left before cutting inside with a dipping effort to the near post. At the other end, Barca get away with a free header as Umtiti suffers a lapse in concentration.
Leganes 0-1 Barcelona
11 mins: GOAL!
Stunning strike from Philippe Coutinho! Lionel Messi dances through four players in midfield and fires the ball into the Brazilian just outside the D of the box. His loose first touch loops up high in front of him but he takes it straight on the volley and thumps it past Cuellar. 1-0!
