From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Manchester United produced a comeback almost as stunning as Cristiano Ronaldo's volley to secure a late 2-1 Champions League win that will live long in the memory.

A fortnight on from being wholly outclassed by the perennial Serie A champions at Old Trafford, the notable improvements made by Jose Mourinho's side looked set to be undone by a moment of brilliance.

Ronaldo's volley will be replayed again and again, but it counted for nothing as United dug deep to produce a famous late comeback.

Juan Mata's sumptuous free-kick hushed the Juventus faithful and Alex Sandro's late own goal secured a win in Turin that breathes new life into the visitors' Champions League campaign.

Mourinho certainly enjoyed the victory, going onto the pitch at full-time and cupping his ear to jeers from the crowd. A fitting end to a mad evening.

Re-live the action below:

Juventus 0-0 Manchester United, 48 minutes

Anthony Martial is trying something relatively similar, curling a trademark effort across the goalkeeper from the left edge of the box.

On this occasion he does not produce the requisite curl and the ball bounces wide.

Juventus 0-0 Manchester United, 49 minutes

Superb riposte from Paulo Dybala!

David De Gea is left absolutely motionless as Dybala unfurls a curling and dipping strike across him with his left foot from the edge of the box, the ball thudding against the bar and behind.

The game has livened since half time.

Juventus 0-0 Manchester United, 53 minutes

Manchester United have space on the right after a Leonardo Bonucci error.

But both Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez find black and white shirts with their crosses.

Ashley Young is down in some both after beating Alex Sandro to a free ball. The Brazilian was a little late and that looks painful.

Juventus 0-0 Manchester United, 55 minutes

Alex Sandro is rightly booked for that challenge.

A stretcher is briefly sighted among the medical personnel assembled on the sideline, but Young is fit enough to walk off under his own power and soon rejoins proceeding on the pitch.

Juventus 0-0 Manchester United, 57 minutes

Mattia De Sciglio has had some joy from right-back this evening.

Victor Lindelof stops his cross, but Paul Pogba offers him another opportunity messing about in the left-back channel.

De Sciglio can't quite profit and Pogba recovers to win the ball back.

Manchester City 3-0 Shakhtar Donetsk, 61 minutes

Danilo replaces Kyle Walker at right-back. Pep Guardiola saving the legs of one of his key men ahead of Sunday's Manchester Derby.

Juventus 0-0 Manchester United, 61 minutes

Blaise Matuidi replaces Sami Khedira and will slip into the same role on the left of central midfield.

A decent replacement...

GOAL! Juventus 1-0 Manchester United (Cristiano Ronaldo, 65 minutes)

MAGNIFICENT!

That is utterly superb.

Leonardo Bonucci gets his head up and plays a delectable ball over the top for Ronaldo.

The Portuguese forward absolutely devours it, watching it closely over his shoulder, bringing his right foot through to connect at the perfect moment and power the ball in at the near post, leaving David De Gea helpless.

His first Champions League goal for Juventus. Sublime.

Manchester City 3-0 Shakhtar Donetsk, 70 minutes

Another penalty for Manchester City. This time David Silva is adjudged to have been fouled.

Gabriel Jesus to take.
