Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

It’s a big game for…
Daniel Sturridge is in for a ‘massive’ year according to Adam Lallana, who said the forward’s return to full fitness is like having ‘two new signings.’ Sturridge has featured heavily in Liverpool’s pre-season as he looks to impress Klopp and pip Coutinho, Roberto Firmino or Sadio Mane in Liverpool’s front three.
Remember when…
In 2001, Liverpool beat Bayern Munich 3-2 in the Uefa Super Cup final. John Arne Riise, Emile Heskey and Michael Owen scored as Gerard Houllier’s men beat the 2001 Champions League winners.
Player to watch…
Philippe Coutinho will be the most talked about player in this match as whispers of his Liverpool exit escalating. No official bid has been made by Barcelona or PSG, who countryman Neymar has been persuading him to join.
Odds…
Bayern Munich to win: 8/15
Liverpool to win: 9/2
Draw: 3/1
Liverpool will be wearing their new change strip tonight.
Shades of that 1995-96 away number and a bleach-blonde Robbie Fowler.
So, who needs to perform tonight?
We ran the rule over Klopp's 30-man squad and picked out a few in need of minutes or just a good display...
12 min: Another chance for Liverpool!
Alberto Moreno bursts down the left and sends a tantalising cross over to the far post where Salah can meet it, but has to adjust his run slightly.
The Egyptian's effort is from a tight angle and Ulreich beats it away.
25 min: Another Liverpool opportunity after Firmino is felled just outside the area.
Coutinho and Moreno stand over the set piece and it's the latter who takes, forcing a high but rather simple save from Ulreich.
The 'keeper doesn't hold the ball and there's a small scramble in the box, but Bayern eventually clear their lines.
42 min: Whisper it, but Alberto Moreno's having a great game.
He slips a ball through that takes out several Bayern shirts and finds a marauding Emre Can, but the midfielder is crowded out by the hosts' backline.
48 min: Corner for Bayern, swung into the near post but Lovren rises to nod away.
Liverpool attempt to break but Sanches is having none of it and hauls Wijnaldum down.
66 min: Roberto Firmino, Joel Matip, Mohamed Salah and Jordan Henderson are all making way.
Ryan Kent, Ragnar Klavan, Daniel Sturridge and Marko Grujic on. This last 25 will be interesting; Liverpool are comfortable but still need to see it out.
68 min: Bright start from Sturridge, who sends a shot glancing across goal shortly after joining the action.
