United have been handed a nightmare tie as they face reigning Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain and the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. With Jose Mourinho's side currently stuck in a nightmare run of form, they will hope for significant change before the two sides meet at Old Trafford in February. There are no such issues for rivals City though, with Pep Guardiola's side cruising through the group stage and securing a favourable tie with Schalke.
That's one of three Anglo-German clashes as Liverpool find themselves paired with Bayern Munich, with the Bundesliga giants still a sizeable opponent even if they are struggling this season. Bayern find themselves nine points behind Borussia Dortmund in the league, who will be heading to London in February as they have been drawn against Tottenham Hotspur, completing the line-up for the four Premier League sides. It's one of the trickiest ties that Manchester United could've faced as Jose Mourinho's side face the dominant French champions PSG and the unstoppable attacking force that is Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani.
It should make for a mouth-watering clash at Old Trafford and the Parc des Princes, but do United stand any chance of getting through to the last-16?
Manchester City will be delighted to have avoided Atletico Madrid given that on paper they were by far the hardest of the four runners-up they could have faced.
Schalke were probably the easiest possibility available for Pep Guardiola's side, and it gives them a good chance of reaching the quarter-finals for a second consecutive year.
The same cannot be said for Liverpool. They may be flying high at the top of the Premier League but they will face a side that Jurgen Klopp knows very well - and for all the wrong reasons.
It was Bayern Munich that destroyed his dream of leading Borussia Dortmund to European glory back in 2013, and while Bayern have changed quite considerably since then, they will still pose a big threat to Liverpool.
History may suggest that Dortmund are an easier proposition than Bayern, but that simply isn't the case this season as Tottenham will face the runaway Bundesliga leaders.
Dortmund have a nine-point lead over Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayern this season, and it will prove a tough ask for Spurs to go to Dortmund and pick up a result - although crucially they plan on being inside their new stadium by the time the first leg takes place in February.
