Barcelona against Napoli is the stand out tie in the Europa League play-offs, with Rangers taking on Borussia Dortmund.

Barcelona find themselves trying to keep alive their hopes of European football after finishing third in their Champions League group behind Bayern Munich and Benfica. It is the first time since 2003-04, when Barcelona were in the UEFA Cup, that the Catalan club will not be in the knockout stages of the Champions League, a competition they have won five times. Napoli, winners of the competition in 1989, progressed from a Europa League group which included Leicester, who they beat 3-2 in the final group game in Naples.

Sevilla, who have won the competition a record six times, will have added incentive to add to that tally with this season’s final taking place at their Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium. Real Betis also see the final hosted in their home city and will play 2008 winners Zenit St Petersburg. The competition’s most successful club Sevilla were paired with Dinamo Zagreb.

We are now being explained the ‘technical procedure’. I don’t know about you but I had no idea pulling 16 balls out of a pot was so technical.

The 2022 Champions League final takes place in Saint-Petersburg which is why Andrey Arshavin is conducting the draw.

He has come onto the stage and is now being asked a series of rather dull questions. It’s almost as if he isn’t too fussed? Stunning.

The draw is taking place in Lyon. We seem to be approaching the end of the formalities. I’m hoping it will get going soon.

Something the TV coverage has just reminded me of is that the away goals rule is no longer in effect in the Champions League this season.

No more “they’ve scored one but it feels like two” type shenanigans this time around.

The draw is scheduled to take place at 11am GMT. Whether or not the ACTUAL draw begins then we don’t know. There could well be some red tape to cut before we get down to the draw.

Let’s see.

Manchester City are the bookies favourites to win the Champions League this season. They are often tipped to lift the trophy but are yet to do so since the big investment came in a decade ago.

Last season they finished runners-up after being beaten by Chelsea in the final. Can they go one step further this time around?

Who are your favourites for the Champions League this season? Three teams secured maximum points in the group stages - Liverpool, Ajax and Bayern Munich.

But then there were a number of sides who came on strong towards the end of the group - most notably Manchester City and Real Madrid.

It’s all to play for as we head into 2022.
