Everything you need to know about new Champions League format

The draws for the Europa League and Conference League took place this afternoon ahead of the start of a new era for European football.

Following on from the new-look Champions League draw yesterday, both the Europa League and Conference League will embrace new formats ahead of this season. The new competitions will look similar to the Champions League, as a 36-team league format replaces the previous group stage. As a result, the draw will look different too: teams will be handed fixtures, rather than being selected into groups.

Rangers will play both Manchester United and Tottenham in the Europa League group stage, adding to fixtures against Lyon, Olympiacos, and Nice. United face a trip to Fenerbahce, where they will play former manager Jose Mourinho, as well as Porto. Spurs, meanwhile, host Roma and face a trip to Galatasaray among their fixtures.

In the Uefa Conference League, Chelsea are the only Premier League team in the hat and the Blues will play Gent from Belgium, Heidenheim from Germany, Astana from Kazakhstan, Shamrock Rovers from Ireland, Panathinaikos from Greece, and Noah from Armenia.

They are joined by Hearts from Scotland, The New Saints from Wales and Larne from Northern Ireland, who found out their fixtures during the draw.

Rangers in the Europa League

Rangers have the fifth-best Uefa coefficient of the 36 teams in the Europa League draw, owing much to their run to the Europa League final in 2022.

The Ibrox side lost on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville, which was followed by a run to the last-16 of the Europa League last season, losing to Benfica.

Rangers also reached the final of the old Uefa Cup in 2008, losing to Zenit St Petersburg in Manchester.

Tottenham in the Europa League

Tottenham are back in the Europa League after not playing in Europe at all last season. They were strong contenders for a Champions League place under Ange Postecoglou, but they fell away over the second half of the season and finished behind Aston Villa.

Spurs were regulars in the Europa League around a decade ago, playing in five consecutive seasons between 2012 and 2016. However, they only reached the quarter-finals on one occasion, and their trophy drought now stands at 16 years.

Ange Postecoglou took charge of Celtic in the Europa League two seasons ago.

Manchester United in the Europa League

Manchester United return to the Europa League for the fourth time in seven seasons - they have not played consecutive Champions League seasons since 2017/18 and 2018/19.

United won the Europa League in 2017, however, beating Ajax under Jose Mourinho. Since then, they reached another final in 2021, losing to Villarreal under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and the quarter-finals in 2023, losing to Sevilla under Erik ten Hag.

United were knocked out of the Champions League in the group stage last season.

What could a Europa League draw look like?

The pots themselves don’t matter as much now anyway, as teams will be drawn against two teams from each pot, inlcuding their own.

Every team in the draw will play two games against a team from Pot 1, for example, whether you are Manchester United or Elfsborg.

A draw for Manchester United, therefore, could look like this: Erik ten Hag’s side will play two teams from each pot, including their own, to give them eight fixtures overall.

One match from each pot would be home, the other away. And you can’t draw teams from your country.

Pot 1 - Roma (h), Rangers (a)

Pot 2 - Real Sociedad (h), Fenerbache (a)

Pot 3 - Dynamov Kyiv (h), Malmo (a)

Pot 4 - Nice (h), Athletic Club (a)
