Bale prepares to down Denmark as Wales get set for last 16 clash

Keep up to date with all the latest news from Euro 2020 as England prepare to face Germany with Wales poised to kick off the round of 16 against Denmark on Saturday.

Leon Goretzka came on to their rescue Germany in the dying stages of Wednesday’s Group F conclusion, which of course means Germany travel to Wembley next Tuesday to take on England.

Though Die Mannschaft represent a tough first opponent in the knockouts, England can still count themselves lucky to have fallen on the favourable side of the draw. Wales on the other hand have a very tough run through to the latter stages of the tournament, with Denmark up first, but they also feature in the same side of the draw as France, Italy, Spain and Croatia, while Belgium take on Portugal in the standout fixture, with Cristiano Ronaldo fresh from breaking yet another international record.

Jordan Henderson, who banked a half of football in the Three Lions’ final game against Czech Republic, has moved to rally his teammates: “We’ve got quite a young squad but I think that can be a positive thing. A lot of these lads just go out and play, enjoy the game, play with no fear. And that’s what they need to do again on Tuesday. Go and enjoy it, go and show everybody how good they are. Use the emotion and passion in the right way to give you energy for the game, because that can be the difference really. As an experienced player I can help with that and make sure we’re in the right frame of mind going into the game and make sure training’s at the level it needs to be over the next few days to prepare for that one. Everybody’s confident, everybody’s feeling good and we’ve got a good few days to prepare for a huge game. But a lot of the lads have played in huge games already: Champions League finals, Champions League games, cup finals, big games for England. They’re used to big games even though they’re young and I’m sure they’re looking forward to this one.”

Ronaldo’s record: Crunching the numbers

With group stage done, the real Euro 2020 now begins

“After groups that could have gone very differently, there were identical sentiments in the dressing rooms of Germany, Spain, Portugal, Croatia and even – to a lesser degree – England. The rallying call was that poor performances and negatives no longer matter. Those squads now have the confidence of qualification. Their tournaments only ‘start now’.

“That might actually be truer than the players think.”

What’s gone well for England so far at Euro 2020?

Our Northern Football Correspondent, Mark Critchley, has explored the good and bad of England’s group-stage efforts at Euro 2020.

What went well? Here’s a short excerpt:

“Let’s start with the obvious: England have three clean sheets from three games.

“The last time they progressed from a group stage with a faultless defensive record, the year was 1966. If that’s not cause for hope, consider that the back line was widely believed to be England’s achilles heel. Harry Maguire’s injury, the lack of depth at centre-half and the uncertainty over who would start as the full-backs did not bode well.”

Away goals rule scrapped by Uefa

In case you missed the news earlier today, Uefa have scrapped the use of the away goals rule in club competitions from next season onwards.

Commenting on the announcement, Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin said: “The away goals rule has been an intrinsic part of Uefa competitions since it was introduced in 1965. However, the question of its abolition has been debated at various Uefa meetings over the last few years. Although there was no unanimity of views, many coaches, fans and other football stakeholders have questioned its fairness and have expressed a preference for the rule to be abolished.”

Euro 2020: Rio Ferdinand names his most valuable player

Rio Ferdinand has named the player who he believes is Euro 2020’s MVP so far – N’Golo Kante.

“I’d go as far as to say he’s the most valuable player in this tournament, if not in Europe completely,” the former-Manchester United defender told the BBC. “I think a big part of his game is he surprises you.

“I know we all know him, but there’s elements of his game where he comes out of nowhere because he’s so quick, he anticipates things so well. He’s the MVP.”

The BBC’s coverage of footballer Christian Eriksen’s collapse and medical treatment on the pitch has become one of the most complained-about TV moments in UK history.

The broadcaster said it has received thousands of complaints over the footage from the Euro 2020 game, during which Danish player Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest.

Euro 2020: Jordan Henderson on Ed Sheeran’s visit

“I have to say that he was a top, top man – a fantastic guy. Straight away he was very warm and as a performer, everybody knows how good he is.

“It was great to have him outside playing a few songs and speaking to us. It was a really good night. To have him round for a few hours was nice.

“It was a relaxed thing, a very private, relaxed thing outside. A bit of food, a barbecue and stuff. He jumped on the guitar and played a few songs so it was incredible really.

“It was a bit special, a bit surreal at times. He was just sitting, playing the guitar while we were eating food. I couldn’t speak highly enough of him and the lads really enjoyed it.”
