Christian Eriksen receives CPR after collapsing during Denmark-Finland game

Denmark’s opening Euro 2020 game against Finland in Copenhagen had to be suspended after Danish player Christian Eriksen collapsed on the field of play.

Medical staff were quick to attend to him while his teammates, opposition and coaching staff were visibily stricken by the scenes unfolding at the Parken Stadium.

Teammates formed a shield around the former Tottenham man, while fans inside the stadium were clearly stunned by the incident, with some pictured in tears. Referee Anthony Taylor called a halt to proceedings shortly before half-time with Finnish players retiring to the dressing room. Danish players remained on the field as doctors attended to Eriksen.

Uefa later confirmed that the match had been suspended officially due to “a medical emergency”. They later confirmed that Eriksen had been transferred to hospital and had been “stabilised.” A further communication from the Danish FA indicated Eriksen was awake when he left the stadium.

The European football governing body also confirmed that the game would restart at 7.30pm with Finland running out winners thanks to Joel Pohjanpalo’s second-half goal.

It was a really difficult night for all involved. Christian Eriksen’s collapse was really distressing and one of the worst things I’ve seen covering football.

For both sets of players to come back and finish the game shows such resilience in their character but you could tell their hearts weren’t in the game.

The main takeaway is that Eriksen is in hospital and in a stable condition. Secondary to that comes Finland’s historic win in their first ever European Championship game.

That result has blown Group B wide open.

Joel Pohjanpalo scored Finland’s first ever goal with what was their first shot in the competition and Lukás Hrádecky is only the third goalkeeper to save a penalty on their debut appearance in the European Championship after Przemyslaw Tyton in 2012 (Poland v Greece) and Trols Rasmussen in 1988 (Denmark v Spain).

Hradecky comes out to claim the ball but it sails through his open arms. the ball comes to Poulsen who doesn’t react in time to poke it into the back of the net. Instead his first touch knocks the ball to Raitala who belts it clear for Finland.

81 mins: Vestergaard spot the chance to play down the left side for Denmark. brings the ball up the pitch and passes it into Jensen before demanding the ball with a piercing run into the box. The Southampton man squares it into the six-yard box after spotting the run of Olsen towards the back post. Lod tracks the midfielder and dives in front of him to intercept the ball at the last moment. Fantastic defending.
