Christian Eriksen receives CPR after collapsing during Denmark-Finland game

Denmark’s opening Euro 2020 game against Finland in Copenhagen had to be suspended after Danish player Christian Eriksen collapsed on the field of play.

Medical staff were quick to attend to him while his teammates, opposition and coaching staff were visibily stricken by the scenes unfolding at the Parken Stadium.

Teammates formed a shield around the former Tottenham man, while fans inside the stadium were clearly stunned by the incident, with some pictured in tears. Referee Anthony Taylor called a halt to proceedings shortly before half-time with Finnish players retiring to the dressing room. Danish players remained on the field as doctors attended to Eriksen.

Uefa later confirmed that the match had been suspended officially due to “a medical emergency”. They later confirmed that Eriksen had been transferred to hospital and had been “stabilised.” A further communication from the Danish FA indicated Eriksen was awake when he left the stadium.

The European football governing body also confirmed that the game would restart at 7.30pm with Finland running out winners thanks to Joel Pohjanpalo’s second-half goal.

Euro 2020: Wales 0 - 1 Switzerland

65 mins: Aaron Ramsey takes the Wales free kick. It’s in a dangerous area, just to the left of the box. Ramsey curls the ball towards the back post, it goes over the heads of Bale and Moore with Rodon unable to reach it before the ball goes out of play.

Euro 2020: YELLOW CARD! Switzerland (Mbabu)

Wales 0 - 1 Switzerland

63 mins: This is a very harsh card for Kevin Mbabu. He comes up against Dan James and slides in with his right leg leading the way. He clearly wins the ball but brings down James in the follow through. Clement Turpin is having none of it though and he pulls out a yellow for the Switzerland defender.

Euro 2020: Wales 0 - 1 Switzerland

60 mins: Close! James wins a corner for Wales and swings the set piece into the box. Manuel Akanji manages to head to the ball to the front of the penalty area where Ben Davies brings it under control with a beautiful touch before drilling a left-footed shot at goal. The effort continues to rise, hits Akanji in the chest, and goes out for another corner that gets wasted with a poor delivery.

Euro 2020: Wales 0 - 1 Switzerland

57 mins: That’s a decent move from Wales who have to be more aggressive now that they’ve gone behind. James brings the ball up the left wing and cuts inside before leaving it for Aaron Ramsey. Ramsey picks out Bale on the right flank and he sets up Joe Morrell for a cross. Morrell’s delivery finds James in the box and he heads it on only for Schar to whack the ball clear from inside the six-yard box.

Euro 2020: Wales 0 - 1 Switzerland

53 mins: Embolo has come alive! He receives the ball in the middle of Wales’ half and turns quickly towards goal before storming forward in another enterprising run. The Welsh defenders just can’t get near him and he’s allowed into the front edge of the penalty area. Embolo slots the ball to Mbabu on the right side of the box but he can only stab the ball wide of the left hand post.

Euro 2020: GOAL! Wales 0 - 1 Switzerland (Embolo)

49 mins: Goal! It has been coming. Breel Embolo meets a Xherdan Shaqiri corner and heads Switzerland in front! Embolo came close to opening the scoring moments before as he made a darting run in between the Welsh centre-backs. He shrugged off Rodon but Mepham stuck with him all the way into the box yet even that wasn’t enough to stop Embolo from blasting a shot at Ward and forcing him into a solid left-handed save. The resultant corner was superb though. Shaqiri swings it into back post. Embolo drifts away from his marker and knocks it sweetly into the back of the net.

Euro 2020: Wales 0 - 0 Switzerland

The teams make their way back out for the second half. There’s no changes from either team so far. Can Wales be a bit more proactive over the course of the second 45 minutes?

Euro 2020: Wales 0 - 0 Switzerland

This is Switzerland’s fifth meeting with a British nation at a major tournament (Euros and World Cup) - they’ve lost three of the previous four, with the only exception being a 1-1 draw with England in their opening match at Euro 1996.

Italy scored three goals in the second half against Turkey last night so there’s still time for Wales to get back into this game.
