Crystal Palace edged bottom-placed Southampton 2-1 at Selhurst Park on Sunday, securing their second home win in the Premier League thanks to goals from Eberechi Eze and Trevor Chalobah.

The victory lifted Palace one place in the standings to 15th, while Southampton remained winless under new manager Ivan Juric, suffering a second consecutive defeat following their 1-0 Boxing Day loss to West Ham United.

Southampton had the more energetic start and took the lead in the 14th minute after Kyle Walker-Peters skipped past Daniel Munoz and his cross found Adam Armstrong, who set up Tyler Dibling for a simple tap-in.

Palace pressed hard for an equaliser and made it 1-1 in the 31st minute when Trevor Chalobah headed in from a corner before Eze sealed the three points for the home side with a strike from the edge of the box.

Palace have started this half well, and in the same fashion that they ended the first half in. They have gone forward aggressively and have posed a threat to the Southampton defence already.

Onuachu was down for a minute or so after a foul on him, but he’s back up on his feet now and the game is away again.

Looking to the second half, Palace need to be more clinical going forward. They could be in the clear by now if they had taken the opportunities that they have created so far. Put a couple of them away in the second half, and they will surely get all three points. For Southampton, they need to get up the pitch more. They have shown through their goal that they are capable of attacking, but they aren’t getting forward enough. If they can get the ball further up the pitch regularly, they will have more chance of winning this game. They can’t rely on moments.

There has been 45 minutes of incredible action so far, and the score reads 1-1 as both teams head into the break. Palace started the game excellently and should’ve gone ahead through Eze who shot straight at Ramsdale. It was the away side who opened the scoring against the run of play, after some magnificent work by Walker-Peters on the left. He cut the ball back across the box and after a touch from Armstrong, Dibling smashed in from close range to give Southampton the lead. The rest of the half was all Palace, as they searched for an equaliser, which they then found in the 31st minute. Hughes swung a left-footed corner in and Chalobah rose highest to equalise at the near post. After a short VAR check, the goal was given and the sides were level again. Palace really should be ahead after a plethora of chances in the closing stages of the half, but it’s 1-1 at the break, with plenty of action still to come.

Southampton are ending the half strongly, and they have earned themselves a corner, which the home fans behind the goal weren’t happy about. The set-piece came to nothing, and Palace cleared with ease.

Less than five minutes remain of the first half, and what a half it has been! No one wants it to end, it’s been electric!
