Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool: Elliott and Salah send Reds top after Ayew’s sending off

Hodgson an outstanding person - Klopp

Liverpool went to the top of the Premier League table with victory over ten-man Crystal Palace as Harvey Elliott fired home a brilliant late winner.

Elliott’s 90th minute strike ensured a below-par Liverpool took all three points away from Selhurst Park after Mohamed Salah had cancelled out Jean-Philippe Mateta’s penalty.

Home manager Roy Hodgson had been booed by Crystal Palace supporters after a flat midweek defeat to Bournemouth, but his team responded well with a vastly-improved performance.

The London club were in control of the game after Mateta converted from 12 yards following a foul by young Liverpool defender Jarrel Quansah, before the game swung. A seemingly innocuous trip on Elliott by Jordan Ayew saw the forward shown a second yellow card by referee Andy Madley.

And almost immediately after Ayew was dismissed, Salah’s deflected effort — his 200th Liverpool goal — put Liverpool level, allowing substitute Elliott to produce a moment of quality and take Liverpool a point above Arsenal, who play Aston Villa later on Saturday.

GOAL! Crystal Palace 1-1 LIVERPOOL (Mohamed Salah, 76 minutes)

And Liverpool are level!

Goal number 150 in the Premier League for Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian’s 200th in a Liverpool shirt in total. Cody Gakpo drives to the byline from an inside right position, crossing to the far post. Michael Olise mis-controls, allowing Curtis Jones to nip in.

The midfielder is wiped out by Joel Ward, which surely would have prompted the intervention of the referee had Salah not reacted sharply to sweep an effort goalwards. A healthy deflection, and in it goes!

RED CARD! Jordan Ayew is sent off! Crystal Palace 1-0 Liverpool, 75 minutes

Red card! A second booking for Jordan Ayew after a trip on Harvey Elliott ends a Liverpool counter-attack. It looks soft, but Andy Madley goes to his pocket, and a stunned Ayew removes his gloves before gingerly making his way towards the tunnel.

Crystal Palace will have to hold out for the remainder with ten men.

Crystal Palace 1-0 Liverpool, 73 minutes

Michael Olise is fed the ball in space by Jeffrey Schlupp, and the Crystal Palace substitute tries to stand up Ibrahima Konate. The defender monitors Olise’s movements well, and makes a firm tackle.

It’s a double change, actually, for Liverpool - Curtis Jones is on alongside Elliott, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Darwin Nunez replaced.

Chris Richards accepts the yellow card of Andy Madley with a nod, the American’s tug-back cynical but necessary with a Liverpudlian quartet bearing down on Crystal Palace’s goal.

Trent Alexander-Arnold finds Darwin Nunez at the far post, but the striker’s karate kick finish is inaccurate. Harvey Elliott looks to be Jurgen Klopp’s next throw of the dice.

After Liverpool clear that free kick, Joe Gomez takes down a crossfield ball nicely and wins a corner.

Trent Alexander-Arnold swings in a high, hanging cross and Virgil van Dijk meets it, but doesn’t get the required contact. Goal kick.

Crystal Palace 1-0 Liverpool, 68 minutes

A second Crystal Palace change, with another injury worry for Roy Hodgson to contend with. Jefferson Lerma has run himself off his feet and it’s a sore trudge to the touchline - Michael Olise is on.

And the dynamic Olise immediately wins a free kick.

Crystal Palace 1-0 Liverpool, 64 minutes

Every time Crystal Palace come forward they look like carving Liverpool open. Those attacking midfield changes and the added urgency having fallen behind seem to have knocked the visitors completely out of shape, with first Jordan Ayew and then Will Hughes just unable to make advanced possession count.

But Crystal Palace are managing this really nicely. They draw a needless foul in the left corner, allowing a loading of the box. Will Hughes will take...but an excellent defensive header leaves a leaping Jefferson Lerma disappointed.

Here’s how Jean-Philippe Mateta put the hosts in front:

That is a real opening for Jeffrey Schlupp. Jean-Philippe Mateta takes down a ball neatly and lays it off for the midfielder, with Liverpool inviting him to shoot on his weaker right foot. Schlupp RSVPs but makes a meek connection, and Alisson claims in relative comfort.

Cody Gakpo’s first involvement of note is a foul on Will Hughes, who has been excellent in midfield today, combative and clever while working hard throughout.

Jurgen Klopp stomps back towards his bench.
