Chelsea vs Southampton LIVE: Carabao Cup result, final score and penalty shootout reaction
Relive all the action live from Stamford Bridge
Chelsea needed penalties to advance in the Carabao Cup for a second consecutive round as they edged past Southampton with a 4-3 shoot-out victory at Stamford Bridge following a 1-1 draw.
Reece James again provided the decisive kick, just as he did against Aston Villa in the previous round, with Theo Walcott and Will Smallbone missing for the Saints.
Kai Havertz headed Chelsea into the lead seconds before half-time, guiding a header into the bottom corner from a corner.
But Southampton would force spot-kicks when Che Adams fired in on the rebound after Kyle Walker-Peters’ effort was saved by the legs of Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Across London, Calum Chambers scored his first goal in more than two years before Eddie Nketiah punished his former club to send Arsenal into the quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over Leeds.
Chambers scored with his first touch of the night after coming off the bench to replace the injured Benjamin White 10 minutes into the second half.
And former Leeds loanee made sure of the Gunners’ place in the quarter-finals when he punished a mistake from Liam Cooper, whose defensive header never had the power to reach Illan Meslier.
Instead Nketiah skipped through, lifting the ball over the goalkeeper before watching his scuffed finish tuck just inside the post as Leeds defenders scrambled to get back.
The result means Arsenal have now won six of their last eight in all competitions, and are unbeaten since August.
It also went to penalties at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium, where League One Sunderland dumped out QPR with a 3-1 shoot-out victory after a goalless draw.
Charlie Austin thought he had scored a late winner to send QPR into the last eight for the first time since 1988.
But a tight offside call went against the home side, and Austin’s misery continued when his spot-kick - the first of the shoot-out - was saved by Sunderland goalkeeper Lee Burge.
He was not the only culprit, though, with Ilias Chair and Yoann Barbet failing to find the target from the spot as QPR went out to League One opposition for a fourth year in a row.
Chelsea 1 - 1 Southampton
59 mins: If history tells us anything, Chelsea should win this game 2-1 with the winning goal being scored in extra-time. That is how the previous two League Cup meetings between the sides have been decided. As there isn’t any official extra-time in this match my money is on a winning goal in stoppage time after the 90.
The Blues win a free kick over on the left wing that Reece James takes and goes for goal. He hits it well and forces Forster into tipping the ball over the crossbar and out for a corner.
Barkley swings in the corner ball and finds Saul deep in the box. Saul wins another header, knocks it into the ground and the ball bounces nicely up for Forster to claim.
Chelsea 1 - 1 Southampton
56 mins: Chance! We’ve got a game on here. It’s Southampton’s turn to attack and they come bursting into the box from the left side. The ball comes to Adam Armstrong waiting on the inside left side of the area and he shoots first time drawing Arrizabalaga into a leaping save to the his left!
At the other end of the pitch Havertz slots a short pass into the box for Barkley where he toes a shot at goal only to be denied by Forster.
Chelsea 1 - 1 Southampton
53 mins: Chance! Ziyech slips the ball through the Southampton defence as Havertz makes a run in behind. The offside flag doesn’t go up and he just has the goalkeeper ahead of him. Havertz brings the ball into the box but a poor touch takes the ball way from him before he can shoot and Forster scoops up the loose ball.
Chelsea 1 - 1 Southampton
50 mins: Save! Chelsea almost respond immediately by passing the ball up to Hudson-Odoi on the right side of the box. He brings it into the area and cuts it back to Havertz. Havertz shimmies to the left to avoid a tackle and lets fly with his left foot. He connects sweetly and draws Forster into a diving save that parries the ball to Walker-Peters who belts it clear.
GOAL! Chelsea 1 - 1 Southampton (Adams, 47’)⚽️
47 mins: It’s not going to be a cleansheet! Lyanco brings the ball down the right side after Saul loses possession. He slips it up to Walker-Peters on the overlap and he drives into the box before firing a shot at Arrizabalaga! The Chelsea goalkeeper makes a sharp save but the ball rolls out to Che Adams who only has to tap it into the open goal! Southampton are level!
Second half: Chelsea 1 - 0 Southampton
Kick off: Chelsea are unbeaten in their last 46 Premier League games when in front at half-time but this is the Carabao Cup. Southampton can throw everything they’ve got at the Blues and hope they earn an equaliser.
The home side get the match back underway at Stamford Bridge. A clean sheet for the Blues and they’re through to the quarter-finals.
Elsewhere in the Carabao Cup
Kai Havertz’s goal is the only one that has been scored in any of the three Carabao Cup matches taking place tonight. The half-time scores look like this :
Chelsea 1 - 0 Southampton
Arsenal 0 - 0 Leeds
QPR 0 - 0 Sunderland
Chelsea 1 - 0 Southampton
Kai Havertz gives Chelsea the lead at Stamford Bridge. How crucial will that goal be at the end of the game?
Remember if the match ends in a draw after 90 minutes plus stoppage time, the result will be decided by a penalty shootout. Can Southampton get a goal back in the second half?
Half-time: Chelsea 1 - 0 Southampton
45+1 mins: Chelsea didn’t create a whole lot in that first half but they’ve got themselves in front with a Kai Havertz goal just before the break. Southampton are playing well though, they’ll be confident that there’s a way back into this match.
GOAL! Chelsea 1 - 0 Southampton (Havertz, 44’)⚽️
44 mins: The deadlock is broken! Hakim Ziyech swings the corner ball into the middle of the box. Kai Havertz leaves his marker, jumps towards it and sinks a header into the back of the net.
It’s a good goal for Chelsea, Southampton will be gutted about conceding from a simple set piece.
