Tuchel on Chelsea form and Malmo

Chelsea achieved a dominant group-stage win against Malmo in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, sweeping aside the Swedish team 4-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Impressive in attack right from kick-off, Thomas Tuchel’s side opened the scoring through Andreas Christensen after just 10 minutes, when the centre-back shinned home a volley for his first goal in Chelsea colours. The Blues then doubled their advantage from the spot midway through the first half, as Jorginho opted against his usual skip to smash a penalty past Malmo goalkeeper Johan Dahlin following a foul on Romelu Lukaku.

That challenge marked the end of Lukaku’s evening, with the striker soon limping down the tunnel. There was also an early exit for Timo Werner, who seemed to succumb to a hamstring issue on the cusp of half-time. Thankfully for Chelsea, they continued to thrive on the pitch, beginning the second half with a third goal courtesy of Kai Havertz, who produced a delightful, clipped finish. Before too long, Jorginho rounded out the scoring by netting another penalty after Antonio Rudiger was fouled while taking a shot.

Follow all the fallout from Chelsea’s group-stage victory over Malmo, below.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

40 mins: Save! More good play from Chelsea. Kante drifts inside on the ball and finds Havertz with a reverse pass. The German had made a good run across his defender and tried to beat Dahlin at his near post, but the goalkeeper stood tall to make the save.

There’s more concern for Chelsea though, as it looks like Timo Werner has pulled his hamstring.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

38 mins: Havertz and Werner exchange passes on the edge of the box and the Stamford Bridge crowd urge Werner to shoot at goal. Werner looked a little hesitant to do so and his effort is blocked by a Malmo defender.

35 mins: Right on call, Havertz then plays a loose pass towards Rudiger which runs out of play. Tuchel was not happy with that one - it’s the only thing Chelsea have got wrong so far.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

33 mins: Chelsea work the ball into a promising area for Havertz, who fires a shot towards the near post which is saved by Malmo goalkeeper Dahlin.

This is a big night for Havertz now after losing his starting spot from the first few weeks of the season. There could be a spot available on Saturday given Lukaku’s injury.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

31 mins: Mount receives possession on the right again but this time flights a cross towards the back post, where Chilwell is arriving. It’s a little high for the wing back but he produces an impressive scissor volley to connect with it. It would have been an extraordinary goal, but it ends up flashing over the bar.

Still, it’s a sign of the confidence that has returned to Chilwell’s game following his run in the team, and the England international then gets another effort on goal following Kante’s lay-off and Mount’s superb flick.

Chelsea are enjoying themselves right now.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

28 mins: Mount picks up possession on the right channel and drives a low ball across the box looking for Werner, whose flick at the front post is deflected wide for a corner.

Nothing comes from it but Chelsea quickly regain possession.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

27 mins: Chance for Malmo! The front two link up as Birmancevic chips a pass over the top for strike partner Colak, but his volley from the angle is wild and sails over the bar.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

24 mins: This was the start, and performance, that Tuchel would have had in mind when he named his starting line-up.

The Blues are in cruise control and Malmo are struggling to compete. Further possession for the hosts follows the restart.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

22 mins: Lukaku has gone straight down the tunnel with what seems to be an ankle issue.

The striker had been playing well but is now a major doubt for Chelsea’s Premier League fixture against Norwich on Saturday.

GOAL! Chelsea 2-0 Malmo (JORGINHO 21’)

Confident stuff from Jorginho. He smashes the penalty down the middle to double Chelsea’s lead.

It’s bad news for Lukaku, though. He can’t continue following that challenge and will be replaced by Havertz.
